It was nearly 4am, when Riley heard a knock at her apartment door. She had just gotten home and was changing for bed; she already wore green shorts so she quickly pulled a black tank top over her head. Due to the hour and the fact that she hadn't buzzed anyone up she quietly moved to the door and glanced through the peephole before opening it to Gabriel.
"We're well past our nightly check-in, the sun is almost coming up. Did you want to borrow a cup of sugar?" Riley asked slightly confused as to why he would be knocking on her door at this hour without an emergency prompting it.
Gabriel stepped past her into the apartment with a small smile on his face, "Maybe." He said as he looked back down at Riley, "Actually I wanted to say thank you."
"What for?" Riley asked closing the door behind her.
"You know what for." Gabriel responded as he moved further into her apartment.
Riley followed him, going to the kitchen and grabbing a beer out of the fridge. "You know, Lillian told me once that we were defined by the decisions we make. Robots don't make decisions they execute code." She opened the bottle and took a quick drink. "You make decisions Gabriel, and from where I sit you make pretty good ones." Riley pulled herself onto the counter top that Gabriel was leaning against. He smiled up at her and took the bottle from her hand, before she could protest he had drained half of it. "I take that back, you just made a very poor decision." Riley said her eyes shooting daggers at him.
Gabriel laughed and handed the bottle back to her, "Did I now?" He asked with a playful smile lighting up his eyes. Riley brought the bottle back to her lips, and Gabriel's eyes followed her movement staying on her lips a second too long after she had removed the bottle. When his eyes finally reconnected with hers he couldn't read the emotions dancing beneath the surface.
Riley noticed his eyes lingering on her lips and when he looked back up she noted the desire etched in his face. She needed to stop this before it went any further, they were tired and come tomorrow she knew that they would both regret if anything happened to unsettle their relationship. She slid of the counter attempting to put some space between them, but at the same moment Gabriel stepped in front of her cutting off her escape route. "What are you doing Gabriel?" she asked pleading with him to step back, while at the same time longing for him to move closer.
"Making another poor decision Riley." He responded as he slipped one hand onto her hip and brought the other up to caress her cheek.
Her eyes drifted down to his lips, then back to his eyes. He started to close the distance between them and Riley met him halfway. Their lips connected for an intense kiss before Riley pulled back. "We can't do this." She said her eyes pleading with Gabriel to see reason.
"We just did." He said not moving from his current location.
"Then we shouldn't do this, I like working with you and I don't want to ruin that for one stupid night." Riley stated as she pushed past him.
"You're right." He said as he moved toward the door, at the last second he turned back "But I'm not sorry that it happened." Gabriel said looking straight into Riley's eyes. He turned and left her apartment, fighting the urge to turn around and capture her lips in his again.
Riley ran a hand through her hair, her fingers touching her lips where Gabriel's had just been. She shook her head and moved toward her bedroom, hopefully after she slept the images of where that could have gone would leave her head and she would be able to go to work like nothing had happened.
