Wolf watched his family quietly

Wolf and Man

Wolf watched his family quietly. He didn't understand why they wouldn't talk to him. He wandered up and down the little area around the fast-wet crying. All he wanted was some food and some attention. He didn't understand what he had done wrong. He went back to his mother and pawed at her softly, wanting her to move, to wake up, to tell him she wanted an apology, even to tell him off badly. He just wanted her to talk to him. And his brothers and sisters were just lying there like the prey they caught, not moving, just waiting to be eaten.

He cried harder and wandered back to the fast-wet, putting his paw into the water and yelping at the strange feeling of it. He looked back at his family. They were still ignoring him. He was starving hungry and had nothing to eat but the grass and that wasn't nearly enough to satisfy his extreme hunger.

He saw Man approaching and wondered if there would be any chance of him feeding him, but then he remembered his parent's warning about Man. They would kill and eat Wolf. This man would kill and eat Wolf. He cried harder, whimpering more and frantically pawing his mother, wanting her to wake up and save him from man. He was scared. More scared than he had ever been in his life. Even more scared than when his parents had told him off for running away.

He felt the man pick him up and he began to shake violently, still crying. Man seemed to be quite interested in him. Did this mean the end for Wolf? He closed his eyes, waiting for a rush of pain or for his heart to stop but nothing happened. Man said something but Wolf didn't understand him. He felt Man putting him back on the ground and saw him picking up a few insects instead.

Wolf sat on the floor shaking, looking up at Man with food. He was so hungry, yet so scared he probably wouldn't have been able to eat anyway. Man gave him part of an insect which he devoured in seconds, feeling grateful for the small amount of food.

Wolf was surprised he hadn't been the food and decided that whatever happened he must protect Man for Man had saved him.
