It started with a dream. If that dream hadn't happened I wouldn't be here, exalted to the position I'm in, saved by something I'd striven to prove was false.
Unfortunately, for me, I am– was– a scientist and my life's work was to prove that magic is nonexistent, to diminish and destroy superstitions. I guess you could argue that even here in the Old Kingdom, a few of the laws of physics still apply.
My name is Nicholas John Andrew Sayre. Living South of the Wall, in Corvere, the Capital of Ancelstierre, many Ancelestierrans would not believe the horrors I saw in the Old Kingdom. I did not even notice.
Lirael, my fiancé, the Abhorsen-in-Waiting, tells me that it was just the free magic creature, Orranis, that possessed me that made me act this way. According to Lirael's sister Sabriel, the Abhorsen, plenty of people have been possessed by Free Magic Creatures, particularly during the time of anarchy in the Old Kingdom, but none of us can deny that it may have been my own very nature that made me oblivious to what was around me. For some reason I could not put two and two together, that perhaps hedge was connected with Corolini, that perhaps there was a reasonwhy Sam, my best friend, had a mother that was a legend at Wyverly College, that everyone worshiped her and only thought of her husband, the king, as merely her slightly less interesting husband.
Besides Orannis, the worst thing I ever did in my life was the Hrule. That was purely unintentional, but again, was only a product of my own stupidity. Lirael has told me not to worry about it, after all, most of the creatures she fought were products of her carelessness. I've argued that there's a difference, but she just shrugs. We have now decided that I can not leave her sight for too long.
