Author's Note: Yet another MusicalverseGlinda piece, mostly written as an attempt to put to paper certain ideas that seemed out of place in 'A Beautiful Lie'. A Double drabble of sorts, narrative exactly 200 words. Hopefully not too dreadful—Enjoy! Thoughts and Criticism are appreciated.

*~*~*

For a woman all of life was a game, a manipulation of public opinion, a practice in pretending. Glinda knew this as everyone knew it, it was an understood and uncommented upon fact of society.

Just as the King decided the fate of a chess match, so men would dictate and shape the world around them for their own purposes. But it was the Queen that held the real power: able to adapt and move in whatever direction required of her to avoid confrontation, able to strike quickly and unpredictably to destroy her adversary, as any Society woman would in order to achieve her goal.

All of her life, Glinda had managed to sidestep any source of danger, and used her well-honed skills in deception to get whatever it was she wanted. Even when her schemes failed, she managed to twist the results to her own ends.

Though pawns and knights had been sacrificed as necessary casualties of the campaign, still she had managed to survive—many times narrowly avoiding the destruction of that perfect persona necessary to carry out the task departed friends had set upon her shoulders.

Until now.

"Glinda, is it true you were her friend?"

Checkmate.
