Opening up her window, letting the rain pelt her face, she looked down.
Mako, completely drenched and holding a pound of pebbles cradled in his shirt, was standing down below looking looking more pathetic than Bolin had when Mako had to cut him off from ramen. And that was immensely pathetic.
"Hey," he called up to her, squinting the rain out of his eyes.
"Um," she mumbled in response. "Do you want to come inside?"
He nodded and looked around. "Yeah, if that's okay."
She nodded back and closed the door, nearly running to the archway of the girls dorm to greet the firebender.
When he arrived, his hair was a little neater, his clothes less crinkled, and the rocks abandoned from his shirt.
"Hey," he greeted again, slipping into the shelter.
"Hi," she greeted, albeit laced with uncertainty. Her eyebrows were furrowed, and her lips pouted. "What's up? Do you want, like, a towel or something?"
He shook his head, rain droplets scattering across the wall behind him and the floor below him. "It's okay. I just wanted to say something that couldn't wait."
She laughed, gesturing to his drenched appearance. "Obviously."
He half smiled at that, before clearing his throat and reaching into his coat pocket.
Korra's eyes were glued to his hand as he pulled out a wrinkled and sopping piece of paper. His golden eyes scanned it as he continued to make muttering noises.
"Okay, well, first of all…" he began, before knitting his brows together. "Wait, no. Actually, I just wanted to say…" he trailed off once more. He sighed before crumpling the paper back up and dropped it onto the ground.
He took her hand, calling for her attention, wanting her blue eyes to meld with his golden ones.
"I'm sorry," he spoke, finality and sorrow lacing through his words. "I was a complete asshole, and I really messed everything up. I even messed this apology up."
She smiled at him softly. "It's okay. You didn't mess it up."
"No," he urged. "I did. I had this whole thing planned out, but then, I don't know. It didn't feel right, so basically I'm just really sorry."
She shrugged. "It's okay."
He squeezed her hand. "No, it's not! I was- I just broke up with you and then went back with Asami and then lied to you when you had amnesia and confused Asami more and then I got more confused and then you found out and our goodbye just didn't seem final enough-"
She hushed him with a laugh before wrapping her arms around his middle. "Mako, it's okay. As long as we're friends, an apology doesn't matter."
They stood there, Mako confused and slightly uncomfortable, and Korra forcing herself to hug him to make things feel right again. He finally put his arms around her gently and squeezing.
"I still love you," he whispered to her, cheeks flushing and heart racing.
"Me too," she responded, smiling back into his shirt. "Maybe someday. But not soon."
He nodded, resting his chin on her head.
His eyes watched the rain.
A/N: I love dorky Mako but I feel like I didn't do well enough with that! Thanks for the prompt & sorry I'm so awful at doing them in a timely fashion.
