llll Midnight Blues llll
Lorelai closed her eyes. The feeling was coming back. It seemed it had even gotten reenforcements.
She looked over at where Luke was resting.
She used to love to watch him sleep. She'd use her fingers to trace his nose, lips, and...his lips some more. Sometimes he'd wake up. Sometimes he wouldn't. She found that he preferred to be left alone during his slumber. Luke, however, knew that was the price he paid by sleeping in the same bed as Lorelai Gilmore. He'd agreed to pay that price the day he had put the ring on her finger. The agreement was sealed when he watched her walk down the aisle toward him, causing the rest of the wedding party to vanish.
Lately, she didn't enjoy seeing him sleep. It reminded her of peace she hadn't gotten in a long time. Her eyes moved away from him.
The feeling that threatened to consume her was now stronger than ever, and she knew she had to get up. So, she pulled away her blanket and got out of the bed carefully. It felt like any excessive bumping would result in a mess all over her carpet. When she made it to the bathroom, she got on her knees and leaned over the bowl in exhaustion.
For a while nothing happened, then without warning, she was filling the bowl with her dinner. When it felt like she had nothing left to give and her dry heave had come to an end, she released a miserable whimper and flushed.
She found a comfortable position and rested on the side of the bowl.
The bathroom door opened.
"Luke?" She called tiredly.
"Guess again," said Luke. He set a cup of gingerale on the countertop. Lorelai was too spent to open her eyes. She smiled at his voice though.
"This sucks," she mumbled as she heard him take a seat on the floor behind her.
Luke sighed softly as he got comfortable. "I know. I'm sorry." He rubbed her back as he closed his eyes. In three hours, he'd have to open the diner.
"Is that coffee?"
He smiled. "Yeah, go ahead and drink it."
Lorelai opened one eye and looked at the cup. "It doesn't look like coffee."
"It doesn't taste like it either. But, we can nickname it coffee."
"What is it really?"
"Gingerale. Same thing it is every night you ask that question."
She closed her eye back. "I'd prefer coffee."
"It's been seven months. You'd think that craving would've gone somewhere else by now."
Lorelai worked hard to shake her head. "Nope. It knows where its home is."
"And here I was thinking you actually had hope."
"Keep hope alive somewhere else. In two months, I'm getting a coffee-filled jacuzzi, a sugar-made bikini, and I'm going for a major dip."
Luke continued to rub her back. He smiled at her comment. "Well, you deserve it," he said softly. "I'm proud of you, Lorelai."
She smiled. "I know, babe."
Luke stopped rubbing. "Come here." He'd brought a pillow, and he pulled it against his chest. She sat between his legs and rested her head on him. He started to gently massage her arm. "You're glowing," he said quietly to her.
"Sweat."
He laughed. "Still. You're beautiful." He kissed her forehead, and she smiled.
"Baby," she whispered.
"Hmm?"
"He doesn't like roast beef. Add roast beef to the list."
"It's added."
She closed her eyes.
