The world seemed to stop and listen and the already faint ticking of the clock was drowned out as his finger tips gently fell upon the keys of the old piano. A slow sad tune, probably as old as the piano and probably just as forgotten, lost in the mess of memories stacked messily in the Kurosaki attic. The sunset painted the room a golden honey mixing itself with tinges of orange. He didn't care, this melody was his link to the past; The chain to his heart.
He remembered this melody at all times, every note, every key.
This was the song that his mother would hum when she was at peace and she would hum it to him when they were at the park waiting for the sun to set. His favorite memory of it was when she had hummed it for Yuzu, Karin, his obnoxious father and himself when the heater had broken in the winter and they were all huddled up by the fire his father had nearly blown himself up to light.
The sweet sound would flow through his mind with every battle, with every step towards danger, with every bit of courage drawn, the music played strong. When he was in the midst of slicing an enemy The music flowed his being and controlled his movements. The music brought him memories of people who he needed to survive for.
For Chad, his closest friend. A promise that will never be fully fulfilled until they both died, and then some. Lungs, keep breathing.
For Ishida, Mr. Prodigy-Quincy himself. Like hell he would die before that son of a bitch. Mind, keep thinking.
For Orihime, the one that made marshmallows feel like rocks. He didn't know how she would react if he died, and he didn't want to find out. Eyes, keep seeing.
For Yuzu, Karin, idiot. One loved one was taken from them, why would he take another because he wasn't strong enough to defend himself? Heart, keep beating.
And Rukia. She what she lacked in kindness tward him, she made up for with violence. She used up all the hot water for showers. She would be forever abusing him, physically and verbally, and he will forever return the favor. She will always suck at drawing, he will always tell her that. They will forever be part of each other. Not a soul (shinigami or not) could stop that. And I will keep living!
Ichigo pushed down on the last key and walked down stairs only to be greeted by a severely pissed off Rukia.
"Ichigo, Where the hell have you been! There's a hollow by Omodatta Avenue and you have to kill it! Let's go!" She screamed.
"Ya, ya, I'm coming."
And as they jumped from roof to roof, the small woman on his back, he began to hum a familiar tune.

Ya know what's weird? I can only write good bleach fics if I'm listening to bleach music! On this particular one I just kept putting the full version of 'Tane wo Maku Hibi' on repeat. OH HO HO.
Have fun with this one, guys. I think it's cute.
