The Legend Of Zelda
The Endless Horizon
Chapter 1: The Great Sea
I slowly open my eyes, wondering where I am for a brief moment, before realizing I'm in my bed. I wipe my eyes and groggily sit up, slightly swaying back and forth to the calm waves outside. I yawn and stretch my arms up, before drooping them down suddenly. Feeling somewhat conscious, I hop out of bed and stumble a little, but I regain my footing and head towards my dresser. I open it up and take out a bright green tunic, with short sleeves and a brown belt with a golden buckle. It's engraved with a Tri-Force symbol. I put on my white leggings, partially covered by the bottom half of the tunic, and then slip on my brown boots and gloves. I then grab my awesome, floppy green hat, and put it on my head. I then grab a blue beaded bracelet, the one my sister gave me nearly a month ago, and slip it on. I decide to leave my sword and shield in my cabin, hoping it will be an uneventful day, despite the rest of the crew on board wishing the opposite. I open the door and step out, startled to see Niko, one of my crew mates waiting for me. He's a short fellow, the shortest of the crew actually. He wears a blue bandanna around his hair, a red and white striped shirt, and green leggings. He also wears a black belt with an ornamental skull on the front, brown boots, and he carries a small cutlas on his left waist.
"Link!" He shouts, a little too loud for how close we are, "Good to see ya bud, but listen up, I got some big news!"
"What is it?" I ask, still half asleep.
"Treasure!" He shouts, again, too loud, "Well, kinda. It's a treasure map, it washed up in a barrel on the side of the ship this morning."
A treasure map? Hm. Intriguing.
"What kind of treasure?" I ask, this time a little more perky than before.
"Don't know. But I'm sure we'll find out once we get it!" He says enthusiastically.
"Nice. By the way, where's Tetra?" I ask, finally feeling more awake.
"Upper deck." He says with a smile, but I can tell he's upset that I'd rather spend time with Tetra than him.
"Thanks." I say as I shuffle past, hoping I didn't hurt his feelings that much. I turn to my right, and head up a flight of stairs to the door that leads to the upper deck. I step out, and immediately get blinded by the sun's blinding rays.
"GAAHHH!" I scream, stumbling backwards into the cabin again and tripping over nothing. I hear chuckling coming from outside, from the other pirates. No surprise. They always enjoy a good laugh. I regain my feet and walk back out, shielding my eyes this time, and I take a minute to adjust.
"Nice show ya put on there, Link!" Chuckles Nudge from across the deck. Nudge is quite tall, pretty well built too. He wears a yellow bandanna around his hair, unlike Niko's, his hair hangs down as it's quite a bit longer. It's a musty dark grayish color. He wears a lavender long sleeve shirt, with dark purple wristbands on either arm. He wears murky green cargo pants, as well as the same belt and skull as Niko, despite his skull being a shiny golden color. He wears white socks up to the middle of his calves, and short brown boots. He carries a small pistol on his left hip, and a larger shotgun, situated on a buckle and slung across his back.
"I agree. Quite a laugh indeed!" Shouts Zuko from the crows nest. Zuko is slightly taller than Niko, around a half inch or so, and has long brown sideburns on either sides of his face. He wears a red bandanna around his head, covering all his hair. He wears a blue and white striped shirt, along with a darker shade of green tights, to slightly differentiate them with Niko's. He wears the same belt and skull as Niko too, and wears a pair of short brown boots. He has a telescope hooked onto the right side of his waist, and a small cutlas, similar to Niko's, on his left side. I sigh. They all laughed at me, but I'm used to it, so it didn't bother me too much.
"Mornin', Link." Says Gonzo from behind the steering wheel of the ship. Gonzo is also tall, although shorter than Nudge by an inch. He's better built though, and despite his menacing looks, he's a very caring person. He wears a green wool shirt, and white leggings, similar to mine. He also wears a red scarf around his waist, and a dark red bandanna around his head. Tucked into his waist scarf are two small revolvers, kept hidden for the element of surprise on any enemies we may encounter.
"Good m-morning, Link." Says Mako shyly from next to Gonzo. Mako is slightly taller than Niko as well, and wears a big pair of glasses, the right lens cracked in the upper right corner. He wears an orange bandana around his head, a blue and white striped shirt, and turquoise leggings, topped with the same belt and skull as Niko. He wears high brown boots and carries a cutlas, slightly longer than Niko's, on his right hip.
"Morning Gonzo, Mako. Nudge and Zuko too." I say, feeling a little worse than before. Despite just laughing in my face, they all give me warm smiles.
"Senzo sill sleepin' down there Link?" Nudge asks in a light tone of annoyance. Thinking back, I noticed him in his bed as I was dressing. Senzo was tall like Gonzo and Nudge, and the strongest in the whole crew. He wears no bandanna, and lets his short black hair blow free in the wind. He has a large, I'll be it impressive beard, and also an impressive build. His usual attire consists of a deep purple shirt, and sleeves halfway down his arms with white cuffs at the end. He also wears dark red leggings and that black belt, this time with a gold skull like Nudge. He wears tall green socks and short red boots, to match his leggings.
"Yeah." I reply slowly to Nudge, who nods his head in confirmation. Taking that as my cue the conversation with the crew is over, I look to the bowsprit of the ship and lock eyes with her. The captain of the ship and this crew, Tetra. She wears a light purple shirt under a blue vest, with a red bandana around her neck, and a red scarf around her waist. She also wears baggy white shorts and light brown sandals, and carries two cutlas's on each of her hips. I've known her over 2 months now, ever since she first arrived at Outset Island, the island I grew up on. She was being carried by a massive bird, until her crew hit it with a catapult forcing it to drop her into the woods at the highest peak of Outset. I climbed up, armed with a sword and shield, and got her down from the peak. Just then, the bird came back, but instead of grabbing Tetra, he grabbed my little sister, Aryll, instead. That was my 13th birthday, and what a day it was. Thus began my journey with the pirates and across the great sea, trying to save my sister. I conquered evils, battled demons, and in the end she was saved, and the king of evil, Ganondorf, the one controlling the bird, was slain by the Master Sword. Through all of it, Tetra was revealed to be Princess Zelda of the ancient kingdom of Hyrule, which had sunk beneath the waves. After finding out our destinies, we parted for the Great Sea, in search of new land to settle, to rebuild the kingdom of Hyrule. It's been 2 months since then, halfway along the second month, I had to rescue Tetra from the clutches of the fabled ghost ship and the demon, Bellum. Through it all though, Tetra and I have become very close friends. I wave to her from where I'm standing, she simply smiles and waves back, then motions me to come over to her. I jog over at a steady pace, and jump up on the railing next to her and dangle my feet over the edge, like she is.
"Good morning Link, sleep well?" She asks calmly, smiling at me upon finishing.
"Sure did. You?" I ask in response.
"Okay, I guess." She says, a little less energetic than before, but that quickly alters as she abruptly changes the subject.
"Did Niko tell you about the treasure map?" She asks, curiously.
"Yeah he did, but do you guys even know where to find it?" I ask.
"Gonzo is the best navigator on the Great Sea, if anyone can get us there it's him!" She boasts, an aura of confidence forming around her.
"Yeah, you're right." I say. I close my eyes, and lean my head back, breathing in the fresh smell of ocean water. Tetra does something similar.
"Oh Link, I just remembered I got something for you. I'll go get it, hang on a second." Tetra says. A gift? As if a treasure map wasn't enough. I open my eyes again as Tetra jumps off the railing onto the deck and jogs into the cabin. I gaze out into the sea, taking in the sight of the deep blue water. Truly a breathtaking view in any person's eyes, but since that's all I've seen for most of the time, it gets a little old. I hope we arrive at an Island soon. Maybe even get a new crew member. Maybe I'm asking for a little too much there. My thoughts are cut off immediately when Tetra runs up to me holding a red bandana, like the one she wears around her neck.
"Here. Now we match!" She says awfully giddy. I chuckle a little.
"Thanks, Tetra." I reply.
"Not at all. Now hurry and put it on!" She commands. I take the bandana from her hands and slip it around my neck, and tie it to the side just like she does, and let the slack off to the side as well. I have to say, it contrasts my tunic quite a bit, but it looks good. Probably.
"Like it?" She asks interested.
"Definitely." Was my reply. It was true. I liked anything from Tetra. My thoughts were cut off yet again when Zuko shouted from the crows nest.
"LAND HO!"
'Finally', I thought to myself. Maybe we'll get to see something interesting.
"PORT SIDE!" Zuko shouts again.
Tetra and I hop onto the deck and run over to the railing on the port side of the ship. We're soon joined by Nudge and Niko, whom I didn't even notice come up to the main deck. In the distance I can see an island, a fairly small one, but who knows what could be there. Grandma always used to say never judge a book by its cover. Oh right. Grandma. I know she was happy to see me leave on an adventure, but I'm sure she misses me, and I miss her too. I still have a couple bottles of her famous soup left, and she even gave me the recipe. I try to save it though, because it's not the same if I make it myself. It's still delicious even leftover. Before I completely drift off into thought I feel a tap on my shoulder. I turn to look what it was, but it was just Tetra. She smiles at me, but it's no ordinary smile. She seems more... excited than usual. Maybe it's the Island, or the treasure map, or even me wearing her gift. Whatever it is, it's a good thing. My thought is cut off again by Tetra's shouts.
"GONZO! HARD TO PORT!"
"AYE AYE MS. TETRA!" Gonzo shouts back as he spins the steering wheel. Tetra starts ordering the crew around to get ready to land the ship soon, and through all the yelling I almost didn't notice the door to the cabin opening. When it opened, Senzo walked out looking tired and worn out.
"Mornin'!" I call out to him as he emerges from the doorframe.
"Yo, Link, everyone." He said quiet albeit slowly.
"Good to see you up for once." Nudge spits with a tone of annoyance. Senzo just shrugs it off and groggily makes his way to the port side and crosses his arms and rests them on the railing.
"Headed over there?" He asks me gesturing to the island Zuko spotted earlier.
"Yeah," I say, "Niko found a treasure map today as well, so that's something else to look forward to."
"Mhm." He mumbles. Senzo is usually calm. Maybe he's just tired all the time. Hell if I know. He looks down and notices the new garment around my neck.
"Where'd you get that?" He questions.
"A gift. From Tetra." I reply.
"Y'know, you've changed her, Link." He says out of the blue.
"Really? How so?"
"Well she used to be a lot more bossy and even sassy at that, but ever since you showed up and the whole Hyrule incident went down, she's been more... relaxed."
He's right. Now that I think about it, she does seem calmer and maybe even a little happier ever since we first met. I guess it's just one of those things I never noticed until it was mentioned.
"I guess." Was my reply.
"Hey, Senzo, when you're done chatting with Link over there will you come and get the anchor ready to drop? And Link can you go help Niko furl the sails?" Zuko semi-shouted as he climbed down from the crows nest.
"Y-Yeah sure." Senzo replied.
"No problem." I replied as well.
After helping out the crew with all their little jobs and furling the sails, we were nearly at a good spot to drop anchor. We are going to head to the island in 2 rowboats, as a dock isn't visible on the island.
"Okay everyone listen up!" Tetra shouted,
"You have 5 minutes to get all your belongings you want to take with you together, and be up here on the main deck. Understand?"
"Yes Ms. Tetra!" Everyone said in unison, including myself.
"Good. Then let's move!" She shouted again, thus the crew sprung to life once more. I jogged downstairs into the cabin with Niko, Senzo, and Mako, to get my belongings. I walked towards my dresser and picked up my sword and shield, which were leaning on the side of the dresser. The shield was wooden and a circle shape, with a painted-on white Triforce in the center. I bought this on some island a couple days after I saved Tetra from the ghost ship. I grabbed a small hook and brown sash and clipped my shield onto it, before sliding it over one shoulder. The sword wasn't anything special, standard iron with a light blue hilt and Triforce insignia at the base of the blade. The sheath was also a light blue color, with a white Triforce insignia in the center. These were both a gift from a friend of mine, Zunari, as a thanks for helping grow his business. He had them custom made and mailed by Rito mail service. I then attach the sheath to my sash and slide the blade inside. I grab a backpack from on top of my dresser and put a change of clothes inside. A royal blue baggy shirt with white designs around the neck and bottom, with a white lobster in the middle, and also light brown leggings. I open my top left drawer and take out my grappling hook and boomerang, and place those in my bag as well. Feeling satisfied, I sling the dark brown backpack over one shoulder and make my way to the upper deck, where I plop down my bag and wait for everyone else. When everyone else emerges, they all have the same things they had before, except Senzo has two shotguns slung across his back, and everyone also has different color backpacks. Tetra emerges from the cabin last, wearing a deep crimson backpack over her left shoulder.
"All right boys," Tetra starts, "lower two rowboats down. Link, Mako, Nudge, and Senzo take one. Gonzo, Niko, Zuko, and I will take the other. Any questions?"
No reply.
"Good. Now get moving!"
"Yes Ms. Tetra!" Everyone says in unison again. We get to work lowering two rowboats into the ocean, and everyone carefully boards them. We then start to make our way to shore. Nudge rows our boat, while Gonzo rows the other. I'm excited to be honest. Our first island for a while. I can only hope it's something exciting, most likely speaking for all the crew members, Tetra as well. I wonder what else lies ahead of us on the Great Sea.
