Halloween With Jim.

Most kids love Halloween. And why wouldn't they? It was the one day they could dress up in cool costumes, and go door-to-door, asking for candy. It really was the perfect holiday for kids.

Six-year-old Jim Hawkins was no exception to this rule. He adored Halloween. It was his favorite holiday, along with Thanksgiving, Christmas and of course, his birthday. This year, he was going as a pirate.

Jim ran downstairs. He was fully clothed in his costume. The costume was comprised of a jacket, a hat, an eye patch and a stuffed manta bird plushy that sat upon his shoulder. The jacket was way too big for him. But Jim didn't mind. He felt very comfortable wearing it.

"Mommy!" he called impatiently. "Where are you? C'mon, let's go. I want to get to go Trick-or-Treating before all the good candy is gone from all the houses."

"I'll be right there, Jim", a female voice called from upstairs.

"Okay", said Jim. He sat down at the bottom of the stairs to wait. A few minutes passed. Then Sarah Hawkins, Jim's mom, appeared. She was dressed as a witch.

"I'm here", said Sarah.

"Finally", said Jim. He sighed. "You were taking forever." Then he looked back upstairs. "Where's daddy?" he asked. "I thought he was going to come with us too."

"Something came up with his job", explained Sarah. Jim's father, Leland, was a merchant spacer. He was usually away from home on business trips for long periods of time.

"But daddy promised he'd be here", said Jim.

"I know he promised you", said Sarah. "But like I said, something came up. And when that happens, daddy has to do it. That's how his job works." "Do you understand this, Jim?" she asked.

Jim nodded. "I understand", he said. But on the inside, Jim was disappointed. He really wanted his father to celebrate Halloween with him.

"You're not going to let this ruin your Halloween , are you?" asked Sarah.

Jim shook his head. "No I won't", he said.

"Good boy", said Sarah. "I thought you wouldn't.

"Now can we go Trick-or- Treating?" asked Jim.

"Yes", said Sarah. "Now we can go Trick-or-Treating."

"Yeah!" shouted Jim. The first house Jim and Sarah came to was that of Dr. Delbert Doppler. He was a friend of the Hawkins family. He had a grand house.

Jim cautiously rang the doorbell. He waited for a moment. Then the door opened. Doppler was standing in the doorway. He was a cainid; half-man, half-dog. He looked down at Jim.

"Hello, Jim", Doppler said kindly.

"Hi, Doctor Doppler", Jim answered back shyly. "Happy Halloween", the boy continued.

"Happy Halloween to you as well", said Doppler. "I suppose you'll be wanting some candy."

Jim's face lit up at the word candy. "Oh yes, please", he said. "I would love to have some candy."

"What are the magic words?" asked Delbert.

"Trick or Treat", said Jim.

"Here you go", said Doppler. He dropped a few pieces of candy into Jim bucket.

"Thank-you", said Jim.

Sarah and Jim went to several other houses. Jim got lots more candy. Then they went home. When they got home, Sarah turned to face Jim.

"Before you eat your candy", she said, "let me check it to make sure it's safe." She checked Jim's candy. It all seamed to be perfectly normal. Sarah gave Jim's candy back to him.

"Now", she said, "don't go eating all of this in one sitting. Have a few pieces now, and save the rest for tomorrow."

"Okay", said Jim. He chose his five favorite pieces of candy from his collection. He ate them quickly. After Jim had finished eating, Sarah took him up to his room. She tucked him into bed. Within minutes, Jim was fast asleep.

The end.
