Hey people! This is just a little one-shot I decided to do, because I really believe Katarra and Zuko should've been a couple. It never happened, so here you go. I hope everyone likes it! :)
Fire and Water
It was late one night when Katarra rose from her sleeping sack, leaving Aang, Sokka, and Zuko still snoring by the dying fire. She couldn't sleep, so she decided she'd practice water bending. In a small clearing, there was a pond. This, she thought, was a good place to practice. She started by pulling out a liquid sphere and, through a series of complicated hand movements, managed to make it fly around her in circles. After five minutes of this, she decided to try something more complicated. She let the water she'd been playing with drop back into the pond with a loud splash. Then she began making pushing and pulling motions, kneading the water. She was trying to make a fairly good-sized wave, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't make it rise any higher than a few inches.
Finally, she let her arms fall limply to her sides, too tired to continue. "Having problems?"
Katarra whirled around in surprise to see Zuko leaning against a tree just behind her. "Oh, you scared me!" she said in a high whisper.
"Sorry." he replied, walking up to stand beside her in front of the small pond. "What made you decide to practice at this time of night?"
She sighed. "I couldn't sleep." She glanced shyly over at him. "I didn't wake you, did I?"
He shook his head, smiling slightly. "I couldn't sleep either." Deliberately, he held his hand out in front of him, palm up, and a small ball of fire burst to life just above it. Katarra stared at it in wonder. She knew she wasn't in any danger. Zuko had changed dramatically in the past few months. He was no longer the frightening prince she had first seen when he invaded her and her brother's village. Now he was more kind and caring. He'd had a change of heart. "Your bending is so different from mine." he said, his voice breaking through her thoughts. "Gentle, painless. All I could do with fire is cause destruction and pain. At least with water, you can heal." He closed his hand into a fist, extinguishing the fire-ball.
Katarra rested a comforting hand on that fist. "Fire isn't all destructive. It gives warmth in times of cold, it cooks food for us to live on, and," She moved her hand from his fist to his chest, right where his heart was. "it provides light in the darkest places."
Before she knew what was happening, Zuko had pulled her into his arms. His lips were at her ear as he whispered, "I love you Katarra." These words had warmth resonating from her chest into her face. A response slipped out of her mouth without her permission.
"I love you too." she whispered, and in her heart, she knew it was true. Zuko pulled away just enough to press his lips to her's. They both felt at that moment that maybe...fire and water weren't that different.
