This is a poem telling the story of what happened between Alfred and Arthur during the Revolutionary War. Written on Memorial Day.

Set Me Free

We were in your shadows

It seemed for far too long

Silent ticking of the clock

As the time goes on

Creatures of the night go on

When darkness seems to fade

I sit down in my bunker

As I count down my days

Sounds of pistols rang through the night

Soldiers marched to and fro

Realization hitting you like lightning

That it was time for to you let me go

Indignant, you yelled at me

Imparting fear into my soul

Great Britain fell to the ground

Shattering his self control

The mud seeped into your clothes

While you sat on the floor and cried

Your wretched sobs broke through my heart

As I created this grand divide

Your pistol lay by your side

Your face hidden behind your hands

I never meant to hurt you

Maybe someday you'll understand

As I turned to walk away

Your huddled form had triggered

A memory from long ago

When you seemed so much bigger

If you would have treated me equally

We wouldn't have fallen apart

But I forgive you, Arthur

We'll be allies forever at heart

I was looking at England and America fan art online when I thought "We were in your shadows" as I saw an image of England with a smug look on his face with a crying child America held within his jacket. With that thought, I was going to write a poem based on soldiers and war in general since it's Memorial Day when it slowly morphed into a poem about America's POV during the Revolutionary War.
