This is just a little one-shot I wrote for Alleybat on Tumblr. Their prompt was dancing, and for some reason this is what I came up with. This takes place in a Young Justice AU, where Dick and Barbara live together, Barbara has just suffered a miscarriage and Dick comforts her. Enjoy and Review!
Dick moved his hand up to wipe away a warm tear that was trickling down Barbara's bright red checks. They have been sitting on their small pale green couch for what felt like hours. Barbara had her knees drawn up to her chest, and was holding back painful sobs. Dick wrapped his arm around her and pulled her closer to him. "Barbara, we can try again."
"I wanted this to be it," Barbara responded, rubbing her eyes, "I did not want to have to 'try again.'"
"I know," Dick said softly, while rubbing her back.
"I thought we did everything right, I don't understand what went wrong" Barbara said, with rage in her voice. She covered her face with her hands and sniffled.
"These things just happen," Dick reassured her. He placed his hand on the side of her face; her skin was warm and moist from crying. "It wasn't anything you or I did."
Barbara removed her has from her face, and allowed their eyes to meet. "It was our baby, Dick." She said in a quiet voice, and closed her eyes tightly to prevent more tears from spilling out of her eyes. Dick wrapped his arms protectively around her and pulled her into a deep hug. She surrendered to his comfort and allowed herself to relax into his arms. Her hands dug their way into his cotton shirt, and buried her head into his neck.
Dick rocked her in his arms back and forth. They sat in quiet for a long while, with nothing but the faint sound of a radio in the background. One of Barbara's favorite songs came on. Dick smiled when he recognized it and ran his fingers through her auburn hair. "May I have this dance?" she asked innocently.
"Dick, I am not really in the mood." Barbara sighed.
"Oh come on Babs," Dick said playfully, as he got off the couch and pulled on Barbara's hand; encouraging her to join him. "Just one dance,"
"Fine," Barbara groaned, "Just one dance." She said as she stood up to join him. He smiled at her, and pulled her into the center of their living room. She wrapped her arms around his neck, and he lifter her up and placed her feet on top of his. He slowly began swaying them back and forth. Barbara rested her head on his chest and sighed contently.
"I love you, Barbara." He whispered softly.
"I love you too, Dick" Barbara answered. She lifted her head off his chest and stared into his deep eyes. A small smile grew on her lips. Even in the worst of times, Dick always had a way of making her feel better.
