The TARDIS landed in the middle of a war torn neighborhood, in the dark of night while the streets were abandoned. The Doctor opened the doors of the TARDIS, leaning out and looking around. He knew that doing that during the day would have gotten his head shot clean off…or chopped…or bitten…or several things. He stepped out into the night air, taking something out of his pocket.

He stared down at the gold locket, the initials MW etched onto it. He sniffled gently and tucked the locket away. It had belonged to HER grandmother, who she was named for. He stepped out of the TARDIS and locked the doors, patting the TARDIS gently before he turned and walked away from it.

He walked down the street as if nothing was wrong. His eyes looking to the numbers of the houses, before he found the one he was looking for; a lone light on in the back. In the study.

She poured over the books, looking for a way to help her Uncle possibly save her Dad. She ran a hand through her shoulder length hair and sighed heavily, growling quietly and pulling on her hair.

"Oh, now don't do that, Mary," a voice came.

Mary looked up, to see HIM standing in the door. The Doctor gave Mary a crooked smile, chuckling when she practically bowled him over, hugging him and burying her face into his chest. The Doctor kissed Mary's hair, sighing softly.

"I can't stay long, love," He spoke softly, making Mary let him go and step back.

Mary looked up at him in confusion, her brows furrowing as her blue-grey eyes looking him over. She chewed on her lip.

"You're regenerating soon, aren't you?" She asked, containing a whimper when he nodded.

Mary hugged the Doctor again, burying her face into his chest once more with a whimper.

"Don't leave me…please," She pleaded, "Please…Daddy is in a coma. Papa is dead…kinda…and Uncle…"

The Doctor tucked a finger under Mary's chin and made her look up at him, her eyes red with tears. He didn't want to leave her either, but he knew that he had no choice. They stood there for a long time, barely noticing the clock striking the top of the hour, until the Doctor started shaking, cringing in a pain that brought them both to their knees.

"Doctor…" Mary spoke, with a worried tone, cupping his face in her hands.

"Radiation poisoning," The Doctor ground out, teeth clenched painfully.

Mary leaned forward, her forehead pressed into the Doctor's. She just knew that this would be the last time to see him this way. This face.

"Mary…" The Doctor croaked, "…I may never get to tell you this again…"

Mary lifted her head, eyebrows knit together in confusion. The Doctor lifted his head, brown eyes taking Mary in one last time. One last time, before he leaned in and brushed his lips gently over hers. He pressed his forehead to hers.

"I love you, my brilliant girl…" He whispered.

Mary froze, tears streaming down her face, as the Doctor put her grandmother's locket back around his neck, taking one final look before he disappeared from the house. The fading sound of the TARDIS haunted Mary's ears and when her uncle and 'god-uncle' came home, the two men found her crying on her knees in the middle of the study.
