Standing tall in your blue, the uniform identifies you
you carry a gun and a badge
you command authority even when things get out of hand.
I thought that night was like any other
You on patrol and me in bed
I never worried that you might be in trouble
You've come out of worse before!
But then we got the call,
The call most families dread:
I remember it all so well.
Mom was at work as well, my brother and I alone.
The phone rang at one-thirty a.m.
Cheif on the other end, asking for my mother.
Since she was not there, I had to receive the horrible truth.
My father was gone, he said, killed by a man who'd lost his head
A clear blow to the chest, in one end, gone through the other.
The doctors pronounced him dead.
A few weeks later you were in your blue
Looking so fine and good,
But the only difference was
You were going to your grave instead of coming home
To all the men and women who still stand tall in blue
Keep up the good work and come home soon.
