Daphne spent a lot of time preparing the evening's menu. With any luck, Niles would notice what she had to tell him. She was preparing baby back ribs, miniature corn on the cob, followed by miniature cheesecakes. Hopefully he would put two and two together and realize the theme-baby- was her way of telling him that their family was about to expand. This was the happiest night of their life. Ronee and Martin were watching two year old David for the night, so the night was theirs and theirs alone to celebrate. She poured him a glass of wine especially for this occasion. She didn't want anything to go wrong.
The phone rang. It was Martin. "Hi, Martin. Is everything okay?"
"Yes, well, I wouldn't call but Ronee thought I should. It's David."
"What about him? Has something happened to him?"
"No, he's just a little homesick that's all. If you'd let him stay over more often like I suggested then we wouldn't have this problem, now would we?"
"Oh Martin," Daphne sighed. "Now's not the time. Has he calmed down now?"
"Sure, he's in there watching TV with Ronee. You should see her try to entertain a crying two year old. I guess all of those years' experience in babysitting have really paid off!" Martin chuckled.
"Well, all right then. If you can try to keep him calm but if he gets fussy again give me a call. I really would like tonight to be special but I don't want to have to worry about David either."
"I know you don't. He's in good hands. Remember, I do have experience of raising two boys myself you know."
Once they said their goodbyes Daphne went into overtime making sure that everything was all right. Finally the minute that she was waiting for had arrived. Her prince had arrived, and she would surely make his dreams come true. It was the least she could do for doing the same for her.
"Hi darling," she purred as she ran to him, wrapping his arms around him. This always was her favorite time of day.
"Hello, my love, you are looking especially fetching tonight. Where's David?"
"He's with your father for the night."
"Supper be dammed. I say we head straight for dessert," Niles pulled her in for several intense kisses.
"Honey, I would love to, but there's time for that later. I've worked really hard on dinner and surely you must be famished. A man like you that works so hard…"
Niles grinned. "Daphne I don't know what I've done to deserve you."
"It's I who's the lucky one," Daphne smiled as she took her husband's hand. "Come now, dinner's ready and you don't want it to get cold."
So she served the dinner and followed it by dessert, hoping he would comment.
"Darling how was dinner?" Daphne asked.
"Delicious! You couldn't get this kind of service at the best restaurant in Seattle. Or in Paris for that matter."
She laughed. "Oh you're just putting me on now."
"Oh I mean it. You're spoiling me."
"Did you notice anything different about tonight's dinner?"
"Nothing unusual. Did you try a new recipe? Where are my manners?"
"No Niles, I was wondering if you had noticed a theme," Daphne prodded.
He stopped to think about it. "Baby back ribs, miniature corn on the cob, miniature cheesecakes-Daphne, are you trying to tell me something?"
She nodded and smiled.
"Oh, my love, this is wonderful? How far along are you?"
"Two months. I went to the doctor's today. I couldn't wait to tell you."
"I am so happy. We have David and we have each other and we have everything we could ever want. I can think of a way to celebrate," Niles said slyly.
"I can't think of anything else I'd like more."
So the three became four, and Martin got to dote on another grandchild, a girl they named Ava. When the baby was born Frasier flew in and made arrangements to have Frederick flown in from Boston so that Martin could have all three of his grandchildren together at the same time. It was, indeed, the happiest time for all of the Cranes.
The end
