Amelia Gilbert
I was finally heading home.
For a few months now, I have been going to a boarding school, hours away from my home, but that's how I like it.
I left because my parents died in a car crash. My twin sister, Elena, was in the car with them, but she survived. We are identical twins, the only way that you could tell us apart was the way we wore our hair. Elena's was straight, I left mine naturally curly. When the accident happened, I couldn't stay. I should've stayed and mourned with my remaining family, but that's not how I was. I couldn't be around people for comfort. I liked being on my own, that's just how I was.
So after the funeral, I took off, finding an excuse in a boarding school for musicians. I kept in contact, but rarely visited. But today that was all about to change.
I was moving back to Mystic Falls.
I paid the taxi driver and stood in front of my house. It was scary… the idea of moving back in, my parents not sleeping in the next room anymore. I took a deep breath and walked up to the door. I knocked and turned away, looking down at the familiar neighbourhood. Nothing looked different; it was as if I had never left.
"Amelia?"
"OW!"
I was immediately ambushed.
"You're here!" Elena said as she wrapped her arms around me. "I can't believe you're here."
"And you're being really nice! Are you ok?" I placed my hand on her forehead, "Hmm, no temperature."
"Alright, Mia?" I looked over my sister's shoulder to see our dear little brother Jeremy... who was looking awfully emo.
I looked him up and down. "What the hell happened to you?" I moved over and stood in front of him. "And pulls these up!" I hooked onto his jeans, tugging them upwards. "What is wrong with you? I can see your underpants!" I turned to look at Elena, "Have you been letting him out of the house like this?"
Elena shrugged and smiled, "You try telling him. He's a moody teenager."
I turned back to my brother, "And you've grown"
"And you haven't," he grinned.
"Excuse me? Well I think I should tell you that I have grown two inches."
"Really?"
"Yeah… But I'd be lying." I scanned the hallway. Yep, everything was how I left it. "So, uh, where is everyone?" Elena and Jeremy looked confused, "A welcome back party?"
"Ohhh..." Jeremy let out, glancing at Elena. "Awkward."
"Mia!"
"Aunt Jenna!" I smiled and hugged her. "God, I've missed you guys." I looked at Jeremy. "Not you." He glared. "I'm kidding, get in here, you emo." I brought him into the hug.
"Yeah we've missed you too." Jeremy replied, rolling his eyes slightly. "Well, see ya!" I grabbed his arm before he headed out the door.
"I've only just got back!"
"And?"
"And you're already going?"
"Yep! Besides, Elena has plans too, tonight." He shrugged my hand off his arm and left.
"Unbelievable!" I exclaimed after him. "And you!" I pointed my finger at Elena, "You made plans too? On the day of my arrival? Shame on you."
"You can come too, Mia," Elena said, walking towards the kitchen, I followed after her.
"I thought we could have a catch up. You, me, Jeremy and Jenna, girls night!"
"We can catch up. Bonnie and Stefan do not get here for another..." She looked at her watch. "-hour," she finished.
"Ah, so I get to meet Stefan tonight?" I asked her, she nodded and smiled "I'll be honest, Elena, Matthew is an extremely hard act to follow. I'm not too sure I'm going to like this Stefan."
"Trust me, you'll love him." Elena said as she opened up the oven.
"Are you sure you don't want to give Matt another go?" I asked her. "Because I can totally make that happen."
"I'm happy with Stefan," Elena said sternly. "It's the first time I've been properly happy in a long time. You know, since..."
I nodded. "Well I'm home now, your other source of happiness." She playfully rolled her eyes at me.
"Bonnie isn't too keen on Stefan so I thought this dinner would show her that he is a good guy," she told me. We walked into the living room and sat down on the couch.
"See, Bonnie's like me, we're both team Matt."
"Matt and I are over, he's accepted that."
"Mmm," I replied. "Go on."
"I just need tonight to go well, I don't want my best friend and my...boyfriend," she said shyly, "fighting. He's a good guy."
"We'll see," I said, cracking my knuckles. I leaned back and my eyes flickered over to the TV. "Animal attack," I read out. "Animal attacks?" I then repeated and turned to Elena. "Wow, what happened while I was gone? The town has gone twilight."
"There has been quite a few lately," She replied.
"What the hell kind of animal do they think it is?"
"I'm not sure, but it attacked Vicki."
"Vicki? As in Vicki Donovan? As in Matthew's sister Vicki?" My eyes widened as she nodded. "Shit… is she ok?"
"Surprisingly she is, but she couldn't give any new information to the police."
"Poor Matthew." I shook my head, "It makes it worse that the loser was already miserable from missing me so much."
"Yeah." She rolled her eyes. "He was devastated."
"It will be hard to like Stefan; no one will replace Matthew in my heart as a brother in law." I lowered my head.
"There's always Jeremy…"
"Right! That is true! It could work, hope is not lost, fear not, my twin." I switched off the TV and stood up. "Well I'm going to unpack, let me know when Bonnie gets here." I said and she nodded.
It felt weird going in my old room, like no time had passed at all. I was ready to come home, though. I had thought long and hard about it, and I wanted to be with my family and my friends again.
I unpacked everything; I even tidied up before I got called down by Elena.
"Mia!" I heard Bonnie squeal. "I can't believe you're back, I thought we had lost you forever."
"Can't get rid of me that easily, Bon," I said as I wrapped my arm around her. "I hear you're not too keen on the new boyfriend."
"Elena told you, huh?" She asked uncomfortably. My eyes flicked over to Elena who was in the kitchen.
"I understand. After Matthew being the last-"
"It's not about Matt, Mia."
"She really values your opinion, more than mine which is annoying." Hmm. "How come you don't like him?"
"It's hard to explain," she replied.
"You could try."
"I just….I just got this really bad feeling when I touched him."
I waited for her to say something else.
"Is that it?" I laughed.
"I know it sounds stupid, but you didn't feel what I felt! You know with what my grams is telling me and all these weird things are happening, I don't know what is going on." she sighed and shook her head. "I want to like him, I really do, and he makes Elena happy so I am hoping that I feel differently by tonight."
"I'm normally a good judge of character." I said and she scoffed. "Excuse me, what was that for?"
"You dated Tyler Lockwood…" She pointed out.
"It's not my fault he became a total ass when we broke up."
"It kind of is…"
"Whose side are you on?" I walked into the kitchen where Elena was. "When is Stefan getting here?" Upon saying that, there was a knock at the door. "I'll just go and see who that is." I smirked at Elena.
"Be nice," she told me.
I scoffed at this. "When am I not?" I walked over and opened the door, I was taking back by how good looking this guy was, my twin did good.
"Hello…" I waited for him to say my sister's name, but he smiled.
"Amelia," he finished.
I clapped my hands; I had even made an attempt to flatten my hair. "Wizard!" I accused.
"It's nice to finally meet you." He stuck out his hand. "I'm Stefan Salvatore."
"Amelia…as you already know. Come in." I said as I opened the door wider.
"Are you enjoying being back?" Stefan asked me as I walked through to the kitchen.
"Well, I came back and found my brother has become an emo...goth, I don't know what he is, but I'm back now and ready to steer him back on track."
We all sat at the dinner table and to say it was awkward, was an understatement. No one was talking and all you could hear was the loud cling noises of the cutlery. I sent Elena a look to get the conversation started, another second of this silence and I think I might go insane.
"So, nice weather we're having." Always a great ice breaker.
"Did Tanner give you a hard time today?" Elena asked Stefan.
"Ugh," I grunted, rolling my eyes. "Tanner is still there?"
"Unfortunately." Bonnie commented.
"He will not be happy to know I'm coming back."
"I can't wait to see the look on his face."
"I take it you're not his biggest fan either?" Stefan asked me with a small smile on his face.
"The dude hates me, just hates me. I didn't even do anything wrong." Bonnie and Elena started laughing at me. "Don't listen to them, Stefan; I was very much the innocent one."
"He let me on the team, so…I must have done something right." he replied.
"Bonnie, you should've seen Stefan today, Tyler threw a ball right at him and-"
"Yeah I heard." Bonnie cut her off.
And back to the awkward silence.
Although I had only been in Stefan's presence for ten minutes, I liked him. He had a kind face, and I didn't get the bad vibe that Bonnie was getting off of him. He seemed good for Elena, he made her happy.
"I haven't heard it, why did Tyler throw a ball at you?" I asked Stefan.
"I don't know," Stefan smiled and shrugged. "Just the perks of being the new kid, I guess."
"Tyler was just jealous that Stefan was able to kick a ball." Elena said, her adoring eyes looking over at Stefan.
"I'm not looking forward to running into him again."
"Why don't you tell Stefan about your family, Bonnie?" Elena made another attempt at getting a conversation started between Bonnie and Stefan.
"Erm, divorced, no mom, live with my dad," Bonnie replied simply.
"No…about the witches." Elena said through gritted teeth.
Bonnie, at first tried to close down the conversation, but Stefan was able to get her talking. He seemed particularly impressed when she told him that her family were the Salem witches.
"Salem witches are heroic examples of individualism and nonconformity," He told her.
"Yeah they are." Bonnie smiled, at last there was a breakthrough. Way to go Stefan, he broke down those walls.
I glanced up at Elena as I heard the doorbell. "Are we expecting more guests?" I asked Elena.
"No," she replied, looking in the direction of the door and then checking her watching.
"I'll get it."
Maybe it was the welcome back party I was waiting for!
"Surprise!" Caroline was standing on the porch, her arms out and a big smile on her face.
She wasn't alone.
I flicked my gaze to the man standing next to her. Wow, what had happened to the men in Mystic Falls since I had been gone? They were gorgeous! The guy had the most amazing blue eyes I had ever seen; I quickly composed myself, by the look on this guy's face he was used to women falling all over him, besides, he was probably Caroline's boyfriend. "Oh my god…Amelia?" The guy's facial expression changed and he now looked confused instead of smug.
"Amelia's at boarding school…" Her face went blank. "I'm kidding." Same old Caroline.
"You're back? For good?" I nodded. "Oh my god!" She said again and smiled at her Damon like he too should be excited that I was back. Caroline hugged me hard, causing me to cough against her.
"Ok, ok." I pulled away, "Yes I get; we're all excited I'm back."
"How about you introduce me?" The guy said, looking at Caroline and then back at me.
"Oh! Right! Amelia, this is my boyfriend Damon, Damon this is Elena's twin sister. It's Stefan's brother."
Damon opened his mouth to speak, but was cut off.
"Damon." I turned around to see Stefan staring intensely at Damon. I had heard a little about Stefan and Damon's relationship from Elena on Skype. Apparently they had this weird rivalry going on.
Elena joined us by the door and looked surprised by Damon and Caroline being here too. Caroline walked in and handed Elena some dessert she had made, but Damon remained outside.
"What are you doing here?" Stefan asked him, stepping forward.
"Waiting for Elena or Amelia to invite me in." Damon replied to Stefan.
"Yeah, you can-"
"No, no," Stefan stopped Elena before she could finish. "He can't erm, he can't stay, can you Damon?"
"Get in here." Caroline piped up.
"We're just finishing up." Stefan said, shooting a desperate look to Elena which she obviously wasn't getting.
"It's fine." She brushed it off. "Come on in." She opened the door wider for Damon. He slid, brushing against me in the process, smirking at Stefan as he did so.
I raised a brow and looked up at him. He may be hot, but I did not give him an invitation to do that. His hand came and rest on my waist as he moved past me.
"You have a beautiful home." Damon commented, looking between both me and Elena.
He was the kind of guy you'd hope your new neighbour would look like.
"Thank you." Elena replied and then she went back into the living. Stefan, Bonnie and Caroline followed her. I waited for Damon to go, but he just stood there.
"Ladies first." He said to me.
I looked at him uneasily. There was something odd about him. Those bad vibes Bonnie was getting from Stefan, I was getting from Damon.
Damon reached above me and held the door open. I walked underneath his arm, glancing up at him in the process. His eyes were firmly on me and I couldn't look away.
"Amelia." I turned my head to see Stefan. "Are you ok?"
"I'm fine." I replied, shaking Damon off.
I quickly walked in and sat down on the armchair, a little embarrassed after my stare off with Damon, but there was just something about him. Great, now he's sitting opposite me with Caroline. I tried not to make eye contact with him, but I couldn't feel him looking at me so I looked. He sent me that smirk again. I was listening in and out of the conversation. That was, until I heard the name Katherine. Elena had told me about her, something happened between Damon and Stefan that had to do with this girl. I thought from what she told me that they had just broken up, but Damon had revealed she had actually died. The conversation died after that reveal, but trusty Caroline brought it back to life
"I cannot believe Mr Tanner put you on the team, Tyler must be seething," Caroline said as she laughed. "But good for you and go for it!"
"That's what I always tell him, you have to engage, you can't just sit there and wait for life to come to you, you have to go get it." Damon leaned forward and picked up his wine, he swirled it around his glass before taking a sip. I couldn't tell whether he was being serious or just trying to mock Caroline.
"Yeah Elena wasn't so lucky today, but it's only because you missed summer camp." Caroline said. I sniggered at Elena who looked a little irritated by Caroline's comment, but then I was put into the firing line. "And Mia, don't know how you're ever going to catch up with the routines."
"I don't plan to." I muttered, I looked up and once again caught Damon looking at me.
Weirdo.
"I'll work with them." Bonnie said quickly, stopping Caroline from going on about it anymore.
"I guess we can put them at the back…" Caroline muttered to herself.
I didn't want to be in the back. I didn't even want to be in the front. I didn't want to do cheerleading at all anymore, but telling that to Caroline wasn't going to be easy.
"While you plan that, I'm going to clear the table." I said as I got up.
I gathered up all the plates and moved to the kitchen where I started putting them into the dishwasher.
Is it safe to come downstairs yet?
Jenna had texted me from upstairs.
Nope, still a lot of rowdy teenagers in your living room
I replied back to her. I wondered how old Damon was. I knew he wasn't in high school, so I wonder what he did.
Jenna: Gross, I hate teenagers
I sniggered. I know, they're the worst.
I turned around to get another plate when suddenly Damon was right in front of me. I hadn't even heard him come in; I jumped and put my hand over my chest. "Do you always do that?" I asked him as I tried to recover.
"Do what?" He asked.
"Sneak up on people." I replied. I had thankfully gotten over my star struck from earlier. "You know, people have died from that."
"Really?"
"Well, I'm sure somewhere they have."
"I brought you this." He held up a glass, I went to take it from him, but it slipped out of my hands. My reactions are terrible and instead of kicking into action, I closed my eyes and waited to hear the sound of it smashing, but it didn't come. I opened an eye to see Damon had caught it.
I see. Another wizard! I laughed at my own joke, I'm so funny.
He smirked and leaned back. "I like you, you know how to laugh." I just nodded awkwardly as I loaded the dishwasher. "Where have you been?"
"What do you mean?" I asked him.
"Caroline said you went somewhere."
"I did," I said, "boarding school."
"Why did you come back?"
"Missed home, I guess. What about you? I hear you've only just come into town."
"Couldn't miss Stefan's first day of school." He said that.
"You're so patronising to him," I closed the dishwasher and leaned against it. "What's the deal there?"
"Our parents died, I'm all he has."
"Oh. Sorry to hear that."
"Don't be. Something tells me you understand."
Stefan had obviously told him the story of what happened to our parents.
My curiosity got the better off me. "Do you mind if I ask you something?"
"Ask away, Amelia."
"That girl that got brought up earlier, Katherine, how did she die? If you don't mind me asking."
"Fire, tragedy." he responded simply, turning his head to look round our kitchen. Part of me thinks he just didn't want me to see what he truly felt about it because for a split second, I thought I saw something in his eyes. Heartbreak.
"Was it recent?" I asked him, wanting him to look at me.
"Seems like it was yesterday." he replied, still looking away from me.
"What was she like?"
He finally looked at me, but his eyes didn't show me anything anymore.
"She was beautiful, a lot like you in that department." Oh how sly. Don't blush, don't blush, I said to myself. He smirked knowing what reaction he had caused. "She was also very complicated, selfish, at times not very kind, but sexy and seductive."
I stepped forward which he took as an invitation to step closer to me too, it then hit me. "You both dated her, didn't you?" I asked him and from the look on his face, I knew I was right, I couldn't help but smirk.
"Ask Stefan, although his answer will probably be different than mine."
"I'm asking you." I replied coolly.
He looked down at me. "I think it's my turn to ask the questions."
"Well maybe I don't want to answer them." I replied. I was standing tall, I didn't want to tell this guy anything. He still gave me the creeps, despite how hot he is.
"Ah, c'mon, I answered yours."
"And I answered yours on why I came back, we're even."
"I've got a lot of questions, Amelia," he leant towards me, his eyes widened, I felt compelled to look into them. "And you'll answer all of them." he told me sternly.
"What do you want to know?" I found myself asking. So much for standing tall, why did I say that? Dammit Mia!
"Are you back here for good?"
"Yes." Why was I telling him?
"How come you left?"
"My parents died, I couldn't cope with being in this house. I felt trapped, haunted, and alone." I revealed. What the hell? Why was I telling him all this?
He then nodded and it seemed like it was the end of his questions when suddenly that smirk was placed back on his face.
"Do you think I'm hot?"
I felt the word 'Yes' about to spring out of mouth even though I was screaming at myself to say no.
"You haven't put the dishwasher on yet, have you?" I turned to see Elena bringing in a plate, snapping me out of my trance and my guilty yes was unheard.
WIN!
Damon chuckled to himself and looked down, leaning back against the counter.
"No, I haven't." I replied, taking the plate from her and loading it in. She smiled and left. I was about to follow in her lead, but Damon's voice stopped me.
"I would quit cheerleading if I were you."
"Why would you say that?" I asked, not daring to make eye contact with him after what happened last time.
"I saw your face when Caroline brought it up, you looked miserable."
"She wanted to put me in the back, that's damn cheeky." I replied, shaking my head.
"You hate it."
"I don't hate it," I scoffed. "I just really don't like it anymore."
"So quit," he told me. "Move on, problem solved…tada." I finally looked at him.
"Some things could matter again." I murmured and I didn't think he had heard.
"Maybe, but it seems unrealistic to me." He replied.
"Mmm." My eyes flickered over him suspiciously. "Just because something bad happens, doesn't mean you should lose faith." He chuckled to himself and looked down. "I'm sorry." He tilted his head in confusion. "About Katherine." His facial expression softened. "You lost her, too." He stared at me, different to how he did before; there was no smugness on his face this time. I had hit a soft spot.
"You're a very caring person, Amelia." Damon said, his eyes studying me.
"You don't know me, I could be a bitch." I told him.
Our conversation was interrupted by Bonnie and Elena. "Do you need some help?"
"Erm," I lost the words. "yeah," I answered dumbly. I looked at Damon and then stepped away from him, realising how close I was leaning to him. That smirk finally returned on his face and he stood up and walked towards the door, but stopped before completely leaving the room. He sent me a wink and walked out.
"What was that?" Bonnie asked me.
"What was what?" I asked dumbly. Oh boy.
"You have been back here five minutes-"
"Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!" I cut her off knowing where she was going with this. "I do not believe what I am hearing."
"I saw that look, Mia!"
"Oh what look?"
"You know what look."
"Well obviously I don't." I crossed my arms and leant against the counter. Bonnie was still giving me that look. "He is Caroline's boyfriend, Bonnie, what do you take me for?"
"I'm watching you."
"Go ahead; you will see there is nothing there."
"Mmm."
"Don't, mmm, me Bonnie Bennett."
Stefan's P.O.V
Damon had stepped back into the room before I could see the marks I knew he had left on Caroline. He had sent her to the kitchen to help Elena, Amelia and Bonnie do the dishes. He had spent a long time in the kitchen with Elena's twin, Amelia. It worried me; he had definitely been intrigued by her resemblance to Katherine. He knew he couldn't get to Elena and he thinks my guard will be down with Amelia, but I will protect her to protect Elena.
"They are people Damon. She's not a puppet, she doesn't exist for your amusement for you to feed on her whenever you want to."
"Sure she does, they all do, they're whatever I want them to be. They're mine for the taking," Damon replied. I needed to get through to him, I needed him to go. I couldn't put Elena or her sister at risk. "From what I hear, I've already created quite the impression on Amelia."
"Alright you've had your fun, you used Caroline, you got to me and Elena, good for you, now it's time to go. Don't make me ask again, Damon."
"That's a problem, because I have been invited in and I will come back tomorrow night, and the following night, and I will do with your little girlfriend's twin whatever I want to do, because that is what is normal to me," he said sternly. "I bet she tastes delicious."
"Stay away, Damon. I mean it."
"You know what? I don't think I will." He stood up and started walking towards the door.
"She's not Katherine."
He stopped and turned around.
"I know that."
"Good."
"But she's the next best thing."
I turned my head as Amelia walked out of the kitchen.
Veins appeared underneath Damon's eyes as he watched her as if she were his next meal.
"Goodbye, Amelia." He said, gaining her attention.
She looked up at Damon and raised an eyebrow, "Bye… Damon?"
"I'll see you around." Damon looked to me before closing the door behind him.
"Your brother is weird." Amelia said to me, watching where Damon had just disappeared.
She had no idea the danger she was in.
