A short story set right after the events of The Girl Who Waited. because I just rewatched it and loved it, but really thought there had to be a continuation of the last scene.
Making it Through
"So, where is she?" Amy asked.
The first thought in Rory's head was Oh my God, she remembers her.
He had no idea what to say, what to do or what would happen from this point onwards. He had helped the older Amy destroy herself. He had listened to her, as he always had, and it was possibly the bravest, most heart-wrenching thing he had ever done to take his hand off the lock and walk away.
But he had still made the decision to not let her in. The decision the Doctor had given him, after telling all three of them that both Amy's could exist in the TARDIS. And he hated the Doctor for that, for giving him the choice to choose. The young wife who hadn't lived through 36 years of Hell, or the older wife who had, and still come out the other side loving him.
He looked at Amy, saw her looking about the TARDIS for her other self, truly interested and closed his eyes. "I'm sorry. She...didn't make it. There were too many of them and she...got captured by the hand bots."
The look of horror that crossed her face broke his heart even further. "Oh no! But she was so good at fighting them!"
Rory nodded and, to his horror, he began to tear up. "Yeah, I know. You almost didn't make it either. I almost lost both of you. And it hurts enough to know she didn't make it. She was you, Amy. She may have been older and harder because of what happened, but...she was still you. In every way that counted, and God, I loved her just as much as I do you. You are the same person, and I'm sorry for that Amy. And she died."
She sat up further, reached out to him, pulled him close and kissed him long, hard and deep. "I know you did. And I would totally have accepted that. It's far too hard to be jealous of yourself. It would have been fun to have two me's running around."
Coming from this Amy, the younger one not jaded by decades alone, he could truly believe it. She would have allowed him to love both of her. And he knew then that he would never, ever tell her that it was partly his fault the other Amy died.
He also knew that the Doctor would say nothing.
And, most importantly, he knew that, given time, he would move on from having made the decision he did. He would not let the older Amy's sacrifice be in vain. He would do both of them proud.
They would make it through this like they have made it through all the other hard choices and decisions that have entered their lives.
Oh, how he loved Amy, all of her, for giving him this.
