A/N – Minerva is something along the lines of 53 here, so pretty young.
also "mam" means mum/mom in some places. I mainly hear scottish say mam, or my own mother talking to her mum..

Dear Alaric.
No one ever had the honour of telling you of the meaning behind your name, so I will explain in this. Today would have been your 17th birthday; however, you are not here to share it. It does break my heart that my little boy never got to see the light of day, even more so that your father ran out on me when it happened.
All I could see was red. The red of the blood, the red of anger and pain coursing through me for letting myself lose you. And for your father running from me when I asked for help. I should have known that he wasn't up for the challenge of knowing me.
Alaric, I know you are up there watching down on your dear old mam. And watching me slowly turn grey from working in Hogwarts. You probably would have joined in with the pranks four of my students pull if you had survived.
I do often wonder what you would be doing right now, and which house you would have been in. Based on your name I would suspect it would have been Gryffindor. You'd have made an old heart proud. Alaric, your name means "someone noble, a Regal Ruler", and of course your father was regal, but he wasn't from a noble house. He wasn't even a pure blood.
My son, you are a half blood, there is nothing wrong with being one.
I do want you here with me, causing havoc and having fun. But it is what the gods wanted. They wanted you and they took you from me.
But I have to thank you Alaric, because of losing you, I became a teacher at Hogwarts, and I hope to stay here until they are tired of seeing my face.
Yours forever
Your mam
