Hannah Abbott doesn't want to admit that she's the jealous type. What she wants is everything she can't have. That's why she almost immediately hates Ginny Weasley despite knowing nearly nothing about the younger girl. Ginny is everything Hannah isn't-effortlessly pretty and effortlessly smart and effortlessly everything. Hannah still hasn't outgrown her pudgy baby face and she's grateful for her for her long blonde hair to conceal the face Hannah hates so much. Maybe if Hannah stays hidden, she can keep the secret of her secret love-hate-maybe crush on Ginny easier. Life would be easier if love wasn't a factor.
Ginny finds Hannah fascinating. Hannah contrasts and clashes with Ginny so much that it's almost magnetic. Ginny, charming and charismatic, wants to get in shy and silent Hannah's impenetrable blonde head. Ginny knows about Hannah through Neville, who says she needs help at Herbology but she's a quick learner with a dry but acerbic wit so it's worth working with her. That tidbit of information isn't enough, she must know more.
"Hello," Ginny states when she sees Hannah in passing.
"Hi, Ginny!" Hannah responds, grinning widely. They talk infrequently after this incident. Ginny doesn't mind the awkwardly blooming friendship.
