Just a little thing to help me get over my writer's block. If you're following my other stories, I'm really sorry and I'll upload another chapter soon.
I was anxiously sitting next to Sorreltail. The younger she-cat looked up at the me, the fear in her eyes clear, and echo of my own. "What if the badgers get in here?" she whispered in fear. "What will happen to the kits?" she asked. I looked at her swollen belly. "They won't." I reassured her, but it was clearly a lie.
Moments seemed like moons in here. Moons of worrying, reassuring Sorreltail, and worrying again. The battle with the badgers was raging outside, and yet I couldn't move Sorreltail. No one could move a queen after she had started kitting, no matter how long it was taking. Not even the best medicine cat. And so they had to wait.
I had to pass the time by sorting the herbs I had brought. Looking at Sorreltail's belly again or checking that the stick was strong helped too. And then, after what seemed like ages of waiting, the kits finally came. It was as I was licking the first one that I heard Sorreltail yowl "Cinderpelt, look out!".
But by the time I had realised what she said I was already flying into the wall, thrown by the badger's paw. As my fuzzy vision saw the badger approaching again, I let out a little prayer to Starclan. Oh Starclan. I couldn't fight, so failed as an apprentice. I couldn't fight, so I failed Sorreltail. I wish I could fight again...
Apparently my prayer wasn't heard... I thought, as my vision slipped away completely.
Everything was black.
Everything was quiet.
And then, I felt something rub up against me. Warm breath on my fur. Snatches of a conversation that I didn't understand much.
"...looks just like her...would have liked that."
"Yeah, she would have. It's a good name too. Cinderkit."
