The 69th Reapings were the most interesting in decades.
Most notably, there was a girl being ripped away from her 3 older brothers, sobbing hysterically. She fell limp to the stage after being dragged away by peacekeepers and they had to bring the microphone to the ground for her to introduce herself. No one had ever been quite as pathetic as her.
In the parade, she was dressed as a shabby tree. In the interview, she wore a pale green dress that gave her the illusion that she was sea-sick. Even Caesar couldn't find much appeal in her. She literally had no angle besides "lamb for the slaughter".
On her first day, she fled for the woods. The viewers knew she had run because she stood no chance and was a weakling waiting to starve to death or be killed off by an animal. Strangely enough, she was not as small as she had looked before the arena. As she ran, some could swear they saw a glimpse of something monstrous in her eyes.
On the third day of the games, somehow the girl was still alive. The cameras hadn't paid any attention to the weakling. Most forgot about her in the action. While she was hiding in a ditch, covered in mud and leaves, there was a silver parachute that dropped from the sky. Her eyes lit up. It was an axe. A rudimentary axe, but a sharp weapon nonetheless. Her family and friends from the district had gathered their lives savings and gave her the tool she needed.
The axe changed her. It was an extension of her hand. She carved spears and sharpened rocks as back up weapons, and then she went hunting. Her first kill gave her a knife and some much appreciated trail mix and water (she had been surviving on sap and the occasional trapped animal). Everyone that she saw got an axe to the face or a knife in the back.
The Capitol was not at all pleased. They didn't like being deceived or that her family helped her win the games. The Games were not about the power of friendship or family, they were about punishment. So he punished her. Everyone who sponsored her axe was killed before she had even returned home from the games. She despised her victor's village house and missed the five pairs of boots lined up at the door. She missed stealing her dad's flannel and the pictures of her mother on the walls of her old house (which was destroyed by a mysterious fire). She was an example, trick us or rebel and we will get revenge. No one wanted to get close to her because they were all afraid that they would be the next victim if she misbehaved.
Eventually her emptiness, sadness, and hidden tears turned back into rage and her walls were full of marks from her many axes. Her anger couldn't be contained. She was even more outspoken since they had no one to use against her. She became an official member of the rebellion by the time the 70th Hunger Games arrived.
