Prelude
It was early in the morning. The sun was just coming up and it shown it's early morning rays on a pair of fishermen in their tiny boat on the sea along the shore of the second kingdom. They had been sitting there since very early hoping to catch a bit to feed their families. As one was leaning over to see if any fish actually were in the water or if they should just give up, he saw something besides a fish.
"Hey what's that shinny thing Lear?"
"Shh. I think I have a bite Marty."
"Forget that. Come and look at this."
The two hoist the strange thing onto their boat. It is a mirror. A very old and dull looking one at that, but upon seeing it the two agree to clean it and sell it for some food instead of fishing for some.
Later the next day as the fishermen headed back towards their home, they are over run my three trolls. The trolls upon seeing the mirror, steal it. When brought before the troll king, the trolls tell of how they stole it from some fishermen. When the king becomes angry with them and asks why how they could do that and fail to bring back a present for his daughter, which is why they were sent out in the first place, one of them replies that the mirror might be the present that he is looking to give to his daughter. A mirror for her to look at herself as she wears her beautiful shoes.
Chapter 1
It was a Friday. The cars were still going by in the city that never sleeps. Kimberly was just getting up. She had a slight headache, but that might be just from the dream/nightmare she had awaken from. It was the same one about her dad and her trying to save him from the car crash. In the beginning she used to wake up screaming every night she had the dream, but as two year went by she stopped the screaming, out loud anyway. This dream/nightmare usually happened now the night before the day her dad had died. Kimberly figured it was one way she never forgot that day or that she was going to go visit his grave later.
She got up out of bed and got ready for the day. Her apartment wasn't grand, but it suited her. To her it was better than living with her mom. After her dad had died, her mom had fell apart. After about six months; however, her friends thought she should got out and have some fun instead of moping around the house all day. Kimberly thought this was a good idea too, until her mom had started bringing back boyfriends, then husbands. The husbands usually turned out to be jerks though, so then one would leave and another would soon take his place. As soon as Kimberly turned 18, she left and moved to her little apartment in New York City. It wasn't too far from her mom, about two hours, but that was far enough for her until she could find a better job farther away.
As Kimberly was eating her breakfast, the phone rang.
"Hello?"
"Kimberly. This is Emma. The boss wants you in to work later today."
"What?! But I requested off!"
"I know, but he said he needs you since two other girls called in sick. Your shift begins at 4. See you then"
"But…."
It was too late, the other girl had hung up. There went her day of visiting her dad's grave and relaxing all day. Kimberly finished her breakfast and locked up her apartment. She walked out of her building and down to street to find some flowers for her dad's grave. That's the thing in New York City, you're either a taxi driver, another crazy driver on the street, or you walk most places.
The better part of her morning was spent at the graveyard talking to her dad. She got back to the city and had lunch at a little restaurant down the street. Then she went home and got ready for work since there was no sense in rushing to get ready later.
