There are monsters out there. I learnt that the hard way. I think it's the only way anyone ever does.
People don't want to know the truth. It's only after they are forced to that they accept it. When there is no other explanation for the horrible things they have seen.
Most people will never have to know. They're the lucky ones.
Some people find it strange. Once you have been forced to accept this new reality, you will almost always encounter monsters again. Some people think they hone in on those who know.
I know better. They've always been out there. It's just that now we have been given the knowledge to see them. To know them.
That man over there telling people he can fulfil all their wildest dreams…for a small price. Demon.
The woman getting doted on by the staff. Witch.
The slightly creepy man at the bar trying to lure a young woman outside. Vampire.
The gruff man in the corner, keeping to himself. Hunter. You learn to recognise them too. But you learn to keep away. Some of them are as dangerous as the creatures they seek.
You find an excuse to keep salt and iron and silver close by.
You watch. You learn. You know. And you keep your head down. You know what's out there.
Everyone else thinks they're safe. But you know the truth. And what they don't know CAN hurt them.
