Hi and welcome to my first fic in many years, updates will be slow but I promise I will finish this. I hope you enjoy please let me know what you think.

Prologue

The national anthem played and I turned just in time to see him walk into the gardens, I smiled despite myself as I notice him adjusting his collar slightly, knowing that he felt uncomfortable in his uniform. I catch his eye for a second, my smile grows wider as he smirks, just a little before the moment is broken.

As if rehearsed, he and his family break apart and follow pre-approved routes through the garden party. I smooth down my dress to ensure no-one can spot the fact I'm wearing another, much more revealing dress underneath this one. Smiling I turn back to the people I was previously conversing with;

"So", one of the women asks curiously, "how did you get invited to the Royal garden party?" her golden hair cascades down her back, the head band fascinator perfectly matching her cream dress.

I flush slightly and remember I have to reference my job "I'm a microbiologist, I work at Great Ormond Street hospital specialising in paediatric disease. How about you?" not exactly explaining how I was invited one of the most exclusive garden parties in the country, I could hardly say that my boyfriend invited me while snuggled on the sofa watching a movie last week.

No one knew who I was dating and that's the way it had to stay, as I tuned back into what the woman was saying I caught a glimpse of him over her shoulder, looking very handsome in his RAF uniform, currently conversing with ease amongst people he'd never met before, a talent I envied and had stated so on multiple occasions. I couldn't believe the year it had been.

As it was I nearly didn't come, today was Alice's birthday and her party started at 7pm, I had to leave here at 6 to ensure I got there on time, hence the second dress, I had to go straight from this high-class respectable event to a bar that she had heard about in work to do tequila shots.

As the woman finished explaining that she had worked with the RSPCA animal charity, specifically with horses and had been invited here in relation to that work, I heard a velvety voice next to my right ear and sighed in relief. "Good afternoon, I'm Prince Edward, on behalf of my grandmother the Queen, the royal family and myself, thank you for coming to our first garden party of the year."

I turn to face Prince Edward, or give him his full title, Prince Edward Antony Masen Cullen-Winsor Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, Baron Carrickfergus, Royal Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, Knight of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, Personal Aide-de-Camp to Her Majesty the Queen, or as I and a handful of people knew him, my boyfriend of a year. As I smiled, I wish I'd have known then that everything was about to change.
