The Epitome of Happiness
Lily Evans couldn't help herself. The moment she saw him enter the platform with his best friend, the corners of her mouth turned upwards. She could feel the beginning of a radiating smile emerging on her face and the tingling warmth of happiness spreading through her body and there was nothing she could do to prevent it from happening.
"Maybe this year…" she thought to herself while darting in-between students and their respective families towards the duo who had just met up with the rest of their friends. "I'm tired of waiting."
Lily came to a halt and after taking a deep breath she walked over to the little group.
"Lily!" exclaimed Remus. "How are you?"
"I'm feeling superb" she replied and it wasn't a lie. By now the prickling sensation had reached her tows and made her feel more alive than ever. She was very well aware of the fact that James was standing only a few steps away.
"Congratulations on making Head Girl!" observed Sirius, "Not that there really was another suitable candidate for the position."
"I'm sure you'll do great", piped up Peter.
"Thank you" Lily beamed. "So, who of you made Head Boy?" she asked, secretly crossing her fingers behind her back. As if on cue, all eyes settled on James who blushed up to the roots of his tousled hair. Lily was sure she would burst with felicity any moment now. "Congratulations, James. I think you are the right choice for the job" she said, giddy with joy. She had to restrain herself from jumping up and down excitedly. Suddenly the year couldn't begin soon enough.
"I wouldn't bet on it. I wasn't a Prefect, consequently I have no idea how it's done. I bet I screw up within the first five minutes" replied an obviously distressed James, also uncertain about how to act upon Lily's odd behaviour. Sure, she had been friendlier towards him at the end of last year but never like this – now she was the epitome of happiness.
"Oh, don't worry about it. I'll help you out where I can. The job does have its upsides, you know."
"That's true. Being a Prefect has certain advantages." voiced Remus. Sirius rolled his eyes. "Yeah, you're right. Just think of it, Prongs: patrolling the corridors at night, endless meetings with the other Prefects, tutoring fellow students, attending the weekly teachers' conferences…"
"But you forgot one important thing, Sirius" said Lily, smiling broadly from one ear to the other. "We Head Students get to set the dates for the Hogsmeade trips. By the way, James, just that you know, I think I'm free on the third of October." And with that she turned around and, positively glowing with happiness, skipped back towards the train, leaving behind a bewildered James who was wondering whether Lily Evans had asked him to ask her out or not.
