A/N: just a songfic with the song "stand by me"

" Inuyasha! I can't hold it! Help me please!" Kagome sobbed through the dark. She stood in the middle of a large orb of pink light. It was the jewel. She was using it. Naraku, deformed and a mass of demons, was slowly being forced towards the barrier where they were being purified. And there was help too. A spiritual women he had seen once in a cave, encased in ice. But the barrier cost energy and that meant that Kagome, not incredibly powerful, was having trouble.

"I'm coming!"

Inuyasha ran towards Kagome. She opened the barrier momentarily and Inuyasha ran to her as fast as he could. He looked at her. She had tears coming down her face and even he could see she was weakening. But what could he do! Then he could see the hands holding the jewel were trembling. He came up behind her and slid his arms around her and pressed his hands to hers. "Kagome let go! I won't lose you! Stop it!"

"No! I won't forgive him. He has to die!"

Inuyasha screamed. She had somehow tapped into his strength and started to use it too. But he didn't pull away, if she needed his strength to live then he would give it.

He felt the body in front of him strengthen and she too screamed. He had to close his eye's to the light shining off her body. He heard a distant shriek of pain. Then silence. He felt the power of the jewel pour back into itself and Kagome collapse against him. He fell to his butt and held onto her. She looked feverish and weak. "K-Kagome?"

"Inuyasha…destroy it. Never let this happen to anyone else." she held up her trembling hands to reveal the jewel. "You do it. We'll do it together!" she smiled softly. "No. I'll die here. But please…stay by me."

"I…I'll stay. Always with you." He held her tightly as he felt her body lose it's strength. He heard her heartbeat slowing. He could here his friends sobbing far away. He clutched the jewel and felt it's warm power. "Can you save her?"

The shikon no tama flickered unhappily.

"No? Then…kill me. Let me have her…let me…she's mine dammit!"

He watched Kagome's smile as he felt the life flowing out of him. He noticed that slowly there bodies were turning to stone, the shikon no tama was encasing itself in their hands.

In the present a young boy glanced out his window to see a stone figure appearing next to the tree he knew all to well. Two heroes there for all to see…for eternity.
