So Like His Father

He's so like his father. Sometimes I have to stop and wonder if it is him—if he's channeling his spirit. Mikau is his namesake, after all. So it really does make me wonder.

He's a courageous one, that son of mine. Even when he was barely old enough to talk. Most of his courage then was usually used to wreak havoc, like the time he dashed onto the stage during the Indigo-Gos's rehearsal and bumped into the sound system, making everything fall apart. Evan was furious.

And it was always him who asked about stories of the hero who had saved the land of Termina when he and his siblings were born. He'd heard them a thousand times, but he always wanted them again.

Of course, my son and his brothers and sisters owe their existences to that hero… Link, his name was. He was the one who rescued them. Mikau, my son's namesake… Finding out his fate was the worst day of my life. Link told me everything. I could see how much it pained him to. He's a kind soul, very fitting for a hero. He even offered me the mask; I told him to keep it.

That was seventeen years ago. My children are all but grown now. Yet Mikau still to this day asks for tales about the hero, much to the exasperation of his brothers and sisters. But now, when he asks, there is a look of pondering and contemplation in his eyes. Rather than calling for the tales of slaying monstrous beasts, he asks about where the hero came from… for Link most certainly did not come from Termina. These stories are more speculative, for no one truly knows.

I know why he does. I understand it better than he does. I am the guardian chosen to protect the temple of Great Bay; it is the duty entrusted to those of my line. As that guardian, I have been gifted with a degree of foresight. Of all my children, it is Mikau's fate that I can see the clearest.

He is leaving soon. His father is descended from the Zora heroes of old, and like I said… He is so like his father. He is destined to leave. He will set out on a quest to find that country from which the Hero Link hailed. He will promise to come back… but that promise will be in vain. Once he leaves Termina, he will never return.

He'll find that land. I know he will. He'll meet a Zora princess there, fall in love, and marry. Just like a hero ought to. What happens after that is beyond me, but I have no doubt that he will do me proud.

Such aching bittersweetness, though.

He'll promise to come back… but that promise will be in vain.

He is so like his father.
