Jack stuttered back into life. He had a heavy feeling in his stomach and he couldn't bring himself to sit up. He noticed he was in a body bag and there were hundreds more around him. He looked to his left. Gwen was knelt beside him, but she wasn't looking at him; she was looking the other way. Suddenly it all came back to him. The 456. Ianto. He forced himself up and moved towards her. His throat caught as he looked down. Lying there, half concealed by a red body bag was Ianto. His Ianto. The Ianto that kept him sane, who kept the team together, who could pull them out of the darkest reaches of hell itself. His Ianto was dead.
He put an arm around Gwen as he sat beside her. He reached out an hand and gently stroked Ianto's cheek. 'There's nothing we can do' whispered Gwen through her tears.
Jack sniffed and wiped away a tear. 'He's gone' he stated. Gwen looked up at him. 'I couldn't save him.' Jack looked down at Ianto and pushed a stray hair out of his eyes. He then straightened his already perfect tie and fiddled with his collar. He let out a moan and looked to the ceiling, his sobs coming out in short gasps. Gwen clutched at him, sobbing as well.
'I couldn't save him!' sobbed Jack, hugging Gwen and crying harder. 'It's all my fault.' He broke down completely, now bowing his head so he was against Ianto's chest. 'Why did you have to die?' Gwen heard him sob, his voice muffled by Ianto's body. 'Why did you leave me?'
'Jack' she started, pulling him gently up. Jack didn't resist, his eyes clearing as he looked down at Ianto. He placed a hand on his forehead . Never again will those eyes open to greet him in the morning with a cheery smile. Never again will he stick his head around the door, asking if he wanted a coffee. No more amazing suits. No more sarcastic remarks. Jack sniffed again, burying his head in Gwen's shoulder. His Ianto will never again wake up.
