When Regulus and Sirius were little and had no idea what their parents were talking about when they mentioned Pureblood ideologies or what any of it meant. The two would play with each other and listened to and believed nearly everything their parents told them. Regulus idolized his older brother and wanted to be just like him similar to how he looked up to his older female cousins though not as much.
However as they got older Sirius started to realize what their parents were saying and began to disagree with them and their family's ways. He started to act out more and get yelled at by their parents. Their parents slowly started to treat them differently praising Regulus and scolding Sirius for everything. They started to spoil Regulus more and more. Sirius began to get more bitter and resent their family causing him to take out his frustration and anger on Kreacher. Regulus didn't fully understand what was going on, he didn't understand why Sirius was doing this or what Sirius was claimed was wrong with their family. He just wanted things to go back to how they were before the more frequent yearling started and Sirius began to isolate himself more and more.
He continued to idolize Sirius until his older brother left for Hogwarts when the news came back that he had been sorted into Gryffindor their parents began to criticize Sirius in front of their younger. No longer having someone there to play devil's advocate or give an opposing opinion Regulus began to buy everything their parents said without doubting any of it. He began to want to be sorted into Slytherin more than anything else and make his parents proud no matter what it took even if it that included eventually becoming a Death Eater.
As Regulus got older and began to serve the Dark Lord he realized being a Death Eater was not nearly as good as it seemed when he was growing up. He desperately wanted a way out but knew the only way out of serving the Dark Lord was death. He resolved to find a way to kill the Dark Lord even though he would probably die in the process. The last year or two of his life he pretended to remain loyal to the Dark Lord while really looking for a way to take him down. He offered to lend the Dark Lord Kreacher thinking that would help make the Dark Lord think he remains loyal.
When Kreacher came back and told him about the cave and locket he knew this was his chance to do the right thing and stop the Dark Lord maybe even make his older brother proud. As Kreacher took him to the lake and helped him get past the obstacles he was reminded of his sorting and the disappointed look on his brother's face when he was sorted into Slytherin like the rest of their family. Thoughts of his older brother and how disappointed he looked and how he regretted not standing up for him in front of their parents plagued him as he drank the potion. Realizing he probably wasn't going to make it he quickly handed off the locket to Kreacher ordering him: "Do whatever it takes to destroy it."
