Salazar cupped her cheek.
Helena's eyes fluttered closed as she leaned into his touch. "Sal, don't leave me," she begged.
"Never," he promised. He leaned down, and when his lips were only an inch from hers, he stopped.
Helena's eyes opened and seeing the hesitation in his eyes, she smiled and closed the gap between them. The kiss was sweet, full of affection and budding passion.
Salazar wrapped his arms around her waist, feeling the gentle swell of her breasts against his chest. Helena whimpered, gripping his shoulders, her fingernails digging into the fine silk of his robes as she yearned to get closer.
Salazar came back to his senses. He ripped his lips away from hers and backed away, silently willing his erection to go down.
"Did I say you could leave?" Helena throatily asked, gripping his arm firmly, keeping him from making a full escape.
"You have no idea what you're doing to me," he warned.
Helena looked down at his prominent hardness. "I think I do know what I'm doing to you. And I didn't say I wanted it to stop. Salazar, you told me you loved me. Were you lying?"
"Of course not, but you're young—"
"I'm seventeen," Helena interrupted, "I'm old enough to know my mind and old enough to make my own decisions. I want you in every way possible. Don't you want me?"
"With every fiber of my being, but it's improper. We should be married before we go any further."
Helena finally let go of him and took a few steps back. Her eyes were wide open with shock. "Do you want to marry me?"
Salazar stared at the floor. "Truthfully, I have never thought of marriage before. It wasn't ever something I wanted. But if I were to take a wife, I would want it to be you."
Helena's lips spread into a wide smile. Her heart raced at his proclamation. She had never felt so happy in her life.
"If you think I'll let my daughter throw her life away on someone like you, then you're delusional," a stern voice broke through the bubble of happiness surrounding them.
Salazar glared at Rowena. "As Helena told me, she's seventeen. If she wants to marry me, there really isn't anything you can do to stop it."
Rowena's raven hair was tied into her usual bun, strands of wispy black framing her face did nothing to soften her expression in the slightest. "I'm her mother, and she won't disobey me."
Helena crossed her arms over her chest. "Well, Mother, you don't own me. I love Salazar, and if he was to properly ask me to marry him, I would say yes."
"I know what's best for you, and he's much too old and surely for my daughter. I have the perfect husband for you. He's a Baron, and he'll give you everything you want."
Helena rolled her eyes. She knew exactly who her mother was talking about. "I don't want the Baron. I want Salazar."
"I forbid it!" Rowena yelled, her magic crackling around in as her rage intensified.
Helena's eyes went to Salazar's. Their gazes locked and communication passed silently between them. Two pairs of lips quirked into smiles.
"Run away with me?" Helena asked, holding out her hand to him.
Salazar gripped it. "Of course, my love. And one day soon, we will marry," he promised. And it was a promise he would keep.
