Elphaba looked sharply up from her book when she heard a slight rustle near the door. It was a white envelope, pushed through the crack between door and floor. She picked it up and went to put it on Galinda's desk with the rest of her valentines, when she actually looked at the front. "Elphaba" the front proclaimed.
Black brows furrowed, she ripped it open, rolling her eyes when she read its contents.
"Normally, this'd be a valintyn, but your green, so it isnt. Haha!"
Elphaba had to cover her mouth with a shaking fist to keep the laughter at bay. "Happy Valentine's day, indeed."
Galinda's head peeped out from her closet. "What are you snickering at, Elphie?"
Elphaba shook her head. "Nothing for you to fret over." She moved over to the candle burning on her nightstand, holding the letter over it and letting go as it caught flame.
Galinda frowned. "You're going to burn the building down one day."
"Good riddance to bad rubbish. I daresay the Unnamed god would protect his children."
Galinda's eyes narrowed. "Oh, bother you and your sarcasm. How can you be so grim, it's Valentine's day! You can practically...smell the love!"
Elphab grinned. "Oh, that's what that smell is. I thought the lavatory had malfunctioned again."
Galinda sighed. "Well, at least you have me. Wouldn't today be horrible without me?"
"Indeed. I'm afraid my lonesome heart would combust with want."
" You're a terrible thing."
Elphaba hid her smile behind her book.
Three pert knocks sounded at the door, and Elphaba heaved out of her chair. Pfannee stood in the threshold, dressed in the tightest, most revealing dress Elphaba had seen in her life.
"My god, Pfannee. If I were you, I'd beat whoever sold me that dress, and make them give me the other half."
Pfannee sniffed haughtily. "Happy Valentine's day to you too, Miss Elphaba. Anyway, Galinda, are you coming to the party."
A long-suffering sigh sounded from the closet. "I have prior engagements, Miss Pfannee. Perhaps I'll see you later."
The last part of the sentence was obscured by the sound of the door closing in Elphaba's face.
"Bitch."
Galinda hid a snicker, walking over to stand next to Elphaba. "Be nice, now. I'm forsaking this party of hers to keep you company, Elphie."
Elphaba raised a thin eyebrow. "You don't have to do that, Galinda. I daresay I'll survive a single night without you."
Galinda huffed, raising on her tiptoes to kiss Elphaba firmly on the mouth.
When she pulled away, Elphaba smiled slightly. "Or, perhaps I can't."
