Deep in the Meadow

I sat there, watching Peeta as he slept. It was the coldest night the Gamemakers have given us so far. He looks the same, just as he did when he gave me the bread, and the same when he pronounced his love to me. No matter what state, he'll always look like the boy who saved me and my family from starvation.I shiver. I wish I could join him in the sleeping bag, but he needs it more then I do. What if I disturb him? I decide it against my better judgement.

It's a cold and windy night. The trees whip around in the wind, yet never make a sound. I also see some tracker jacker nests swaying alongside. I hope this shelter is enough to conceal us from them. If those nests fall, they wouldn't go after me and my ally. The trees remind of the song I sang . The song that I sang to Rue. I still remember it so clearly. Marvel coming out of nowhere and spearing her, my arrow piercing his neck. Her begging me to sing one last time. I start to sing it again...

"Deep in the meadow, Under the Willow
A bed of grass, a soft green pillow…"

I stop, then watch some leaves flow through the air, and land in a small pile in front of our cave. I hope those leaves help disguise the entrance

"Lay down your head, close your sleepy eyes,
And when they open the sun will rise…."

How I wish I could sleep, but with Peeta so frail, and he needs his rest, so I need to wake up and keep watch.

"Here it's safe, Here it's warm,
Here the daisies guard you from harm…."

I wonder if that's the world before the Hunger Games. Where children could grow up and be safe, with no threat of death hanging over then once every year.

"Here your dreams are sweet
and tomorrow brings them true"

Well, tomorrow will be the same anyways. Me and all the other tributes stuck in this arena until two are left. My instincts tell me not to be naïve. Of course I'm not getting out of here alive. My dream anyways, is for Prim to be happy and have a family. I, of course don't want children.

"Here is the place where I love you"

A voice joins me this time. I turn, and find Peeta sitting up, his shoulders propped against the ground. I turn and say "Go back to sleep"

"I can't, he says, trying to get up, but falls on the ground once more. I rush to help him back into the sleeping bag.

"You're beautiful voice woke me up from my dream", he explains. He then rushes on to explain his dream, which I wasn't really paying attention to, except it has something to do with bread.

"Well, maybe it's time this beautiful voice and lips give you a reason to go back to sleep, I respond enthusiastically. I kiss him, and I think I can actually hear the crowds go wild. I release.

"Sing once more, he begs, Please?".

I sigh, and start singing the song again, his face relaxing throughout the song until the very last line, where he caresses my face and joins me again on the line that gives people a reason to live

"Here is the place where I love you"
