"Jack, I don't know what that is but you are not keeping it."
"But look, she's so cute and huggable." Jack squeezed the big, fluffy pink animal he was carrying and it let out an alarmed yelp.
"You're hurting it." Ianto glared at his partner. "What is it anyway?"
"No idea. Found her in a garbage bin near Splott. Thought she could do with a home. Pretty sure she's alien, or maybe 29th Century. Either way, I couldn't just leave her there could I?"
"We can't afford to keep any more pets Jack. Janet and Myfanwy already eat us out of house and home. How do we know what it eats anyway? For all you know, it might slaughter us in our beds." Ianto stared warily at the creature. He couldn't see its eyes and that unnerved him a bit. Well, rather a lot actually. Jack, on the other hand, wasn't remotely alarmed; he was cuddling the creature like a baby and that worried Ianto even more.
"I'm not saying we keep her forever, just until we can find her a suitable home. Or something…" Jack grinned and cooed over his new discovery. It seemed he'd rather taken to motherhood.
"How do you know it's a girl?" Ianto asked, fearing he might be questioning the obvious.
"She's pink and she told me," Jack replied casually. "She's telepathic but her language is pretty much impossible to understand. All I could figure out is that she's lost and she's a girl - both sort of obvious anyway."
"So what are you going to do with her?" Ianto didn't relish the thought of looking after another one of Jack's pet projects and he was damned if he was going to clean up after the thing. Myfanwy had already ruined five mops this month.
"I'm gunna keep her in my office until we decide what to do with her. She'll freeze to death in the cells and she's hardly a prisoner is she?" Jack smiled down at his charge. The creature had gone suspiciously quiet.
Ianto wasn't happy. He wasn't a callous man by any means, but he'd definitely have left that thing in the bin. Something wasn't right.
He watched as Jack took the creature into his office and sat it down upon his desk.
"I think she might like some coffee!" Jack shouted, as Ianto retreated back upstairs.
Ten minutes later
"Ianto! Ianto! IANTO!"
"Yes Jack," Ianto replied, walking towards Jack's office and stopping dead at the door.
"I think she pooped."
