No one really remembers their feelings when Antauri died and Chiro disappeared.
All I remember is Chiro's screams.
His screams for Antauri to not sacrifice himself. His screams of pain as the Power Primate changed him.
It was like everything restarted when he ran off.
We chased after him, after his now monkey-like body. He was fast, too fast for us to catch him.
When we found him, he was trying to revive Antauri. He looked somewhat human again. Gibson said later that he was a Cro-Magnon. I didn't care. I just wanted our leader back.
When he flipped the switch and nothing happened, my heart went out to the broken, changed child.
When he transferred Antauri's essence into the new body, I shouted out his name. What pain he was in! I just wanted to stop him. Finally, he fainted, looking like a human again.
We were captured by those primitive formless. I looked at Chiro's face, so calm in his pain-induced slumber. I prayed that his sufferings would end.
When Antauri, reborn as a silver monkey, saved us, I had no choice but to hug him.
He had returned to keep his promise.
Now I finally remember the feelings.
