Summary: Edward remembers his mother.
Words: 255
Edward thought about his mother often. The way she'd pulled her hair back, the careful way she stood, the smile and the sad eyes.
It was almost as if she was tattooed permanently behind his eyelids, always there when he closed his eyes to sleep. He dreamed of her almost every night, of the way she'd smelled, the way she'd laughed. Such dreams should have been sad, or should have made him miss her all the more.
Instead, they made him feel closer to her.
Everything he had become was indirectly caused by her, and they way she had raised him. Early on, she had taught him that family came first, that his biggest responsibility was looking after Al. Well, he'd taken those lessons to heart. Family became his driving purpose -- protecting Al from the dangerous realities of the real world, when he was able, and trying to ensure that his brother had a mother to be raised by.
That last, of course, was a mistake.
But Edward knew his mother would have understood their desperation. She would have understood that he was simply trying to keep their family together and happy...
And yet...
And yet, Edward no longer just saw his mother's smile. With horrifying clarity, he also saw the heaving mass of innards and limbs he had turned his mother into. He had loved her so much, and had sacrificed so much, and had gained nothing...
And now, thinking back, Edward wished he had loved her enough to simply let her go.
