Disclaimer: I do not own Pride and Prejudice. Both book and movie belong to people who are not me. The first two quotes are from the movie.

"From the first moment I met you, your arrogance and conceit, your selfish disdain for the feelings of others made me realize that you were the last man in the world I could ever be prevailed upon to marry," Elizabeth spat. The two stood in silence. She could the see the hurt attempting to be hidden beneath Mr. Darcy's stony composure. His eyes flicked to her mouth and back up at her eyes several times. He leaned in and opened his mouth, taking a breath as if he wished to speak but said nothing. A droplet of water fell from his hair onto his cheek. A moment later, he spoke softly:

"Forgive me, madam, for taking up so much of your time." He paused to look at her, the heartbreak more apparent than before. Elizabeth only stared coldly back. As he turned away he kept his gaze on her and his breath hitched.

How can I forget this beautiful creature, he wondered as he finally turned his back on the woman he loved. As he stepped out into the rain he couldn't help but shed a tear.

No, he thought. It is only the rain. He would not pity his foolishness. Of course, why would he, the great Fitzwilliam Darcy, weep over the rejection of some silly peasant girl? She was not worthy of his tears, time, or attention. How could he even think of wanting to marry her? Elizabeth Bennet was without class, stubborn, arrogant, prideful, infuriating, invigorating, thoughtful, intelligent, witty, charming, beautiful…

He stopped himself. He could not – should not – linger on the spirited woman who had enamored him so. But convincing himself to abandon his feelings for her was proving hard to do. The wetness slicked down his face in cold sheets. But there were no tears, he tried convincing himself again. It was only the rain.
