Do you remember when we were just kids
And cardboard boxes took us miles from what we would miss
Schoolyard conversations taken to heart
And laughter took the place of everything we knew we were not
I pushed all thoughts of him out of my head.
"Hey Ash! Can you come zip me up?" I asked distractedly.
"Sure," Ashleigh said. Then after she was finished, I turned around to look in the mirror.
It was better than I ever imagined. The white strapless dress shone against my fair complexion. I looked radiant.
"Oh my gosh, Casey!" Ashleigh squealed in excitement. "It's gorgeous."
"I know," I said, feeling speechless.
"I can't believe you're getting married today, and that you chose me to be your maid of honor! I'm so excited." She ran over to give me a hug.
"Yeah," I mumbled, "I sorta can't believe it either."
I glanced at myself in the mirror. Then I smiled slowly. "But I'm really thrilled," I said, turning back to Ashleigh.
"You should be. You and Evan are like the perfect couple." Then she paused and hesitated before speaking again. "Have you…thought about him?" she asked slowly.
I wanna break every clock
The hands of time could never move again
We could stay in this moment (stay in this moment)
For the rest of our lives
Is it over now hey, hey, is it over now
I could have asked who the "he" she was referring to was. But, let's face it; we both knew who she was talking about. "He," my only other "he" that I truly cared about. I looked at Ashleigh with mixed emotions in my face.
"He isn't right for me. I love Evan. I'll always love Cappie in my heart, but he had his chance." I shook my head sadly.
Then someone knocked on my door.
"Knock, knock." It was Cappie. I'd recognize his voice anywhere.
"Um, I'll just leave," Ashleigh said quickly. Then she headed out the door, leaving me alone with Cappie.
"So, you're getting married today." Cappie tried to say it nonchalantly. "To Evan."
"Yeah."
"That's…cool." Cappie looked at me.
I wanna be your last, first kiss
That you'll ever have
I wanna be your last, first kiss
I sighed. "Look Cappie, I know you came to talk me out of marrying Evan. But, even after all that's happened, I really do love him." I hesitated. "I'll always love you too. But, let's face it, we…just weren't going to work." I heard the pain in my voice. I'm sure Cappie heard it too.
Cappie stiffened. "I know, Casey."
"I told you this is where I'd end up being in ten years: married to Evan, a bunch of kids, and a job. Where are you now?"
Then Cappie gave me the saddest of all smiles. He reached up to stroke my jaw. "With you."
My heart stopped pounding for a second. I bit my lip as I looked down at my engagement ring.
Amazing how life turns out the way that it does
We end up hurting the worst, the only ones we really love
He gave me one last smile, before heading out my door. "See you at the wedding, Case."
In the silence, I whispered after him. "Bye Cappie."
Is it over now hey, hey, is it over now
Is it over how hey, hey, it's not over now
I wanna be your last, first kiss
That you'll ever have (that you'll ever have)
I wanna be your last, first love (that you'll ever have)
Till you're lying here beside me with arms and eyes open wide
I wanna be your last, first kiss for all time
