Lucius had come back from the summer before seventh year sporting the Dark Mark and talking about his new Lord and his plans all the time. Severus didn't understand his lover anymore. Why was such an intelligent man fooled by the promises of this 'Dark Lord'? He would never follow him, degrading himself and playing pawn to some power hungry maniac. It had taken him enough to free himself from his father.
They had had an argument about it and now Lucius was showing him the cold shoulder. Severus couldn't bear it any longer. Lucius was the only good thing that had ever happened to him and he wouldn't let him be taken away by anyone.
I didn't come this far to throw the towel in
I didn't fight this hard to walk away
If I ain't smart enough to say I'm sorry
It's just because the words got in the way
So he decided against his better judgement to join Voldemort, just to be with his lover again.
I remember how it used to be

We were more than just the same
But Lucius had changed dramatically. He really believed this pureblood superiority nonsense and acted accordingly. He became cruel and relished in the discomfort of others, Severus included. This wasn't the man he had known for so long anymore.

I got one foot in and one foot off the ground
Only now Severus did love him. He had given up his freedom for Lucius, had decided to follow him against his own beliefs and wants. He just couldn't take the cruel remarks and condescending looks much longer. And Lucius, his beautiful Lucius, his saviour, no longer cared. He was just as bad as Black and Potter, if not worse.
Sitting here while you're fast asleep

And Severus left Lucius. The decision wasn't as hard as he would have thought. He vowed to never love again as it wasn't worth the hurt in the end. He wouldn't let his emotions rule over his life again. He had made enough mistakes already.
But every year on that day he would remember how he came back to the light, how Dumbledore had taken in the broken young man he was and offered him sanctuary from this cruel world that didn't believe him.
