Cloaked in Darkness
Description: In the realm of darkness, things always go bump in the night. In-Universe. One of three Halloween one-shots, Oct. 31st 2015.
A/N: So I'm writing three short one-shots for Halloween this year since I don't think I've ever written for it before. The other two are called "Boo" and "Pumpkin Pie" if anyone's interested. Word of warning, "Boo" is rated M.
Rating: K+
Warnings: None really, but I rated it K+ just in case.

There was something following her.
It stalked quietly through the darkness, glowing eyes locked on her figure.
She was walking slowly, quietly… Her figure hunched over in fatigue. It would strike soon.
Within her grasp was held a light. A light bright, and powerful, and strong. This was why it waited. It hungered for a heart to feed on, but the curious, otherworldly creature before it needed to be weaker. It could not risk being touched by the light.
It had watched as its kin was shredded by that light.
It had watched as the glowing object cut through the darkness.
It had watched, and it had waited.
It would have its meal. And this being with a heart would provide it.

Aqua dragged her feet as she remained aware of the creature stalking the darkness, wondering when it would strike at her. All of the other dark creatures had practically thrown themselves at her. What was this one waiting for?
For a while, she thought it was simply her imagination. That she was slowly losing her mind as she trekked through the realm of darkness. She wouldn't be surprised. She belonged in the realm of light, with her master and her friends…with her family.
Sighing, she had to remind herself that this family was no more. Her master was gone, and all she had left of him was the keyblade in her hand, guiding her through the darkness. Her friends? Possessed and broken. She could only hope that Terra would fight against the darkness that Xehanort had implanted into his heart. She could only hope he would one day be able to take his body back. As for Ven? She clutched a hand to her chest in regret. Nothing would quell the guilt she felt for locking him up in that castle knowing now that she might never be back to wake him up.
Looking up at the road ahead of her, there was nothing but pitch black. Slowly, the realization crept up on her that this was her future. She'll never know the fate of her friends. She could walk for days, months, years, and never escape from this nightmare. She'd likely fade away in this desolate realm.
Removing her hand from her heart, Aqua trudged forward regardless. She had been saved, who knows how long ago, by her friends' light. She wasn't going to let their help go to waste. Maybe there was nothing left for her… But she was going to keep walking.
Not to mention, she had to shake off the thing that was tracking her. What was it waiting for, she wondered. Why hasn't it attacked her yet? Was it intelligent?
Such thoughts were terrifying to Aqua. The monsters of darkness were bad enough as mindless beasts.
Suddenly, there was a change in the air. A shift, as if something large had displaced the atmosphere. Gulping, the lone keyblade master readied her own former master's weapon, tossing away the remnants of her sad and lonely thoughts. Now was not the time to grieve. Now was the time to survive.
She heard the beast before she saw it. The rough pounding of paws against the rocky ground, the harsh, animalistic breathing, the low growling… It finally decided to strike. Turning, keyblade raised and face set in a determined scowl, Aqua prepared to block the creature's attack.
And was met with a pair of red eyes, cloaked in darkness.

A/N: I suck at writing horror, forgive me.
