Today is James Potter's birthday, I don't know if you knew. But either way-enjoy!
Disclaimer: I do not own James Potter or Harry Potter.
James grinned. Today was his day. Or, his birthday at least-but it was more or less the same thing. And all of Hogwarts knew it. All day James was getting pats on his back and, 'Happy Birthday!' Lily, his girlfriend, had given him a broom polishing kit, and a kiss-or snog; does it matter? She had, since it was his seventeenth, given him permission to hex Snivelly-or, she had said she would pretend not to notice.
Everything was great-except for one thing.
"So, Prongs-what do you want for your birthday?"
"Nothing from you, I'd like to think."
Sirius Black, one of his best friends and almost brothers, had been badgering him about what he wanted. Remus and Peter had already given their gifts-everyone had, with the exception Sirius.
"Padfoot," James had finally said, exasperated, "why didn't you get me anything earlier?"
"Not my fault that Lily stole my gift."
James raised his eyebrow. "You wanted to snog me?"
"No! The broom thing."
"Well, Sirius," began James sarcastically, "you could get me the latest broom."
Sirius' eyes lit up. "I didn't know there was one, but okay!"
"Let me reword it-you could get the companies to start one."
"Oh," Sirius frowned, looking dejected. Suddenly, his face brightened. "I could-"
"No."
"How about-"
"No."
"But-"
"No."
Sirius threw his hands up in the air. "You didn't even know what I was going to say!" James raised an eyebrow. "Okay, fine."
There was a pause.
"Maybe I do know what I want…"
Sirius grinned eagerly. "Yeah?"
"Become my minion for a week, admit I am the prank extraordinaire for life, and wear Slytherin robes for three days."
Sirius' face fell comically. "But your birthday's only today!"
"And my requests last longer. Any questions?"
Sirius observed James carefully. "Nah. I think I'll just get you a new broom."
James was incredulous. "But they don't have a new broom!"
Sirius grinned. "Exactly."
Happy birthday, James.
