As a child, Dick Grayson didn't really have close friends. At least, not until Wally became Kid Flash and joined him in the sidekick business. A few missions together and both were begging their mentors for a play date.
"It's good for him." Alfred had said, "He's only a child. He might not want to do this forever."
So it was; they met up at a park. Both Bruce and Barry kept a close eye on them- not at all trusting the people occupying the Gotham playground. Wally wanted to play tag but Robin wanted to play hide-and-seek.
They decided to compromise and play a game of hide-and-go-seek-tag. Robin was it first. He counted to ten with his eyes shut, listening for the sound of Wally's footsteps. It was hard because of the other kids in the park.
Wally had hidden under the slide. He was crouched down and pressed under the lower part of it with his eyes wide open in case he saw Robin coming. He thought Robin was kind of a weird kid. He was younger and had a funny name. Robin. How strange, like a bird.
The younger boy spotted him and started racing towards him. Wally leapt up and, remembering not to cheat and use his power, ran towards the bench where Bruce and Barry were talking- home free.
He looked back for a moment to see Robin still racing towards him but kept running. Then, Wally West tripped. He fell to the grass and before he could get up, Robin was standing over him.
"You're it!" he said, tagging his fallen friend.
Wally frowned, "No fair! I tripped!"
Robin couldn't help but giggle. Suddenly he felt his legs move out from under him. He landed on the grass with a soft thud. Wally had pulled him down so quickly, the younger boy didn't have time to realize his glasses had slipped off his face.
Over at the park bench, Bruce Wayne stood up abruptly. Barry also stood up, sensing the bat's panic, "What's wrong?"
"Robin's sunglasses slipped." Bruce stated calmly.
Bruce Wayne was also wearing sunglasses, a hat, and incredibly un-Bruce-Wayne-like clothes. Barry knew who he was but not Wally; though it looked like he would figure it out any second.
"Robin!" Wally cried out, "Your eyes are so blue!"
"Shh!" he responded, "Don't use that name here!"
"What? But I thought…oh!" Wally frowned at his own stupidity, "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I couldn't. Batman said I wasn't allowed to tell anyone my secret identity." Robin shrugged.
At this point Bruce had come over to them. Robin's sunglasses were back on. Barry and Wally were looking between them with concern and confusion.
"We should be going." Bruce said calmly.
Wally frowned. It wasn't fair that his friend had to wear those dorky sunglasses all the time. It took him a minute, as they were walking away, to remember where he'd seen those eyes before. The news, those celebrity gossip magazines his mother bought, once when he and the Flash were in Gotham.
"Dick! Wait!" Wally called out, to the shock of his uncle he quickly ran to catch up to them.
Bruce remained calm as he turned around. Dick couldn't help smile as Wally flew to a stop in front of them, Barry not far behind. Everything seemed a bit tense until Wally spoke.
"I promise I won't tell anyone! Please don't send Batman after me!"
