When she received the call her heart fell. Thoughts began racing through her mind and she kept reliving moments from earlier in the evening.
"No, no, no" he said for the millionth time.
"What do you want from me? She asked dejectedly. She had been giving her all but it wasn't good enough for him.
"All I want is for you to live up to your full potential."
"And this is helping me how?"
"Fine" he stated throwing his arms into the air and walking towards the door.
Now here she was, speeding down the highway in hopes of making it on time. To see her beloved, to feel him, to tell him at least once how much she loved him. She knew it was unreasonable, though she couldn't help but blame herself for this.
"Why did I let him walk away?" she asked herself as she ran a shaky hand through her hair. "It was cold and rainy. He was upset. He was in no condition to drive, but you let him go anyway." she scolded herself.
When she arrived at the scene, the sight before her took her breath away. Her eyes immediately blurred with unshed tears and a stinging pain shot through her heart. Their was his Jeep, engulfed in flames and no sign of him. Firemen were frantically working to put out the fire and policemen were questioning a group of onlookers. She asked a thousand questions but received no answers. Finally things started to look up. Her world stopped as they pulled him from the torched car.
She pushed her way through the nosy neighbors and paramedics to kneel by his side. She clutched his hand and silently prayed he would be alright.
He slowly opened his and smiled a weak smile. Tears of joy flooded her eyes. She still had a chance. In one quick breath she let her feelings out.
"I love you."
Taken back by the sudden announcement, he let it sink in and replied in one final breath.
"I love you too, Chloe." with that he smiled once more and let his eyes slip shut.
Their relationship had just began and it now looked as though it was about to come to an end. They had finally admitted their true feelings. They had opened their eyes to what everyone around them saw, but it seems to have been.... too late.
