skipping stones
""So many things become beautiful when you really look."
- before i fall
ron/hermione
It was a perfect, crisp fall day. She breathed in, closing her eyes; when she did this, she could almost pretend that they weren't on the run for their lives, that people weren't being abducted daily and her best friend didn't have a wanted sticker above his head. Her bushy hair whipped around her like a chestnut mane and she lifted a delicate finger to brush it away. Harry, who had long decided to stop trying to get them to talk, had gone on a quest to find something edible, or to give them room to talk on their own, something she was grateful for.
Ron seemed to have calmed down f his insane jealousy, just for the time being, and was watching the iron-grey lake's smooth, glassy surface. The smell of the sea soothed her, reminding her of hot summers in France, and of her parents and of being safe and happy, and she couldn't help the little tear that leaked out of her eye. Calm down, Hermione, she commanded herself, Harry needs you to stay strong.
Suddenly, Ron picked up a flat rock and threw it at the sea. "It's amazing, isn't it?" he finally said.
"What is?" she wondered.
"That I can make such a change in this huge lake, just by dropping a rock on it." He gestured back to the lake, where ripples had shattered the mirror-like surface of the water. She nodded.
"How do you do that?" she wondered aloud. Ron, who seemed to be in a trace, looked back at her.
"It's quite easy, really," he said. "You take a rock, the more flat the better, and you toss it," he threw another, slightly larger, rock into the sea. She tried the same thing but to no avail.
To her frustration, it didn't work. This new feeling of inadequacy frightened her, it had always been her teaching Ron and Harry these things, when did they reverse roles? "It's not working."
"D'you mind?" Ron muttered, face red. She shook her head, her face also a light crimson. His warm arms encircled her body and she couldn't help but think about how nice this felt.
"You do it like this," he instructed.
Together, they skipped stones for an hour, not saying anything, for once, they didn't have to: being with each other was enough.
finite.
an: I absolutely loved this deleted scene even though it waas more rupert/emma than r/hr but anyway ... please don't fav without leaving a review.
