For those who were following What Ails You, I've decided to take a break from the wrestling fanfic side of things for awhile. So I'll be doing a Phoenix Wright story to make up for lost time. Also, I'm aiming to stray away from the typical BS romance like I did in Stand With Me. The OC of Max Thorne is portrayed by Garrett Hedlund. Enjoy!

Shadow Of The Turnabout
Chapter 1: Thorns
He called on it. He felt consumed by it.
It was his last thought every day, and his last thought every night, making him obey it's every command.
Max knew one word controlled him, drove him to madness. Yet at the same time, he felt as though it gave him a reason to continue fighting.
But what lay before him...it was not what he expected. Especially from his former rivals. And for someone who had a past darker than the corners of hell itself, it came off as nothing more than an insult.
"Payback" was written on the wall in the victim's blood, and Max's taped hands were stained with it as well. He couldn't even tell if it was his own blood anymore.
The underground boxer had no time to clear the evidence. The cops were already on him, putting him in handcuffs, dragging him away like a criminal.
The only downside...was that's exactly how he felt.
2 Weeks Later…..
Sitting in the detention center in chains, Max stared at the floor, lost in thought. His focus was broken when he heard the alarm sound in the interrogation room.
"Thorne? You got visitors." The guard said.
"Bring 'em in." Max said in a low voice. The bell sounded, and in stepped two individuals Max thought he would never see again.
The former "Demon Attorney", and one of the best DA's in the industry, Miles Edgeworth and Phoenix Wright. Max smirked when they sat down.
"Two for the price of one?" He joked. Edgeworth chuckled.
"Not necessarily." Miles said crossing his arms. Phoenix sat down and leaned back in his chair.
"I'm sure you've been informed. You're being charged for the murder of the mayor's son, Samuel Goland." Phoenix said. Max scoffed.
"You think I did it?" He sneered. Miles shook his head.
"Obviously not. Everyone here knows of your rivalry with Goland." Miles said. "And the good detective did not find any of your fingerprints at the scene." Max looked at his hands and showed them to the attorney's before him.
"Ya really think I could kill a man with these?" He said sarcastically. Miles and Phoenix did not grin at his joke.
"Mr. Thorne, we are being serious." Phoenix said. "We need you to tell us what happened that night, and what you were doing in exact detail." This time, Max dropped his snarky attitude and leaned back.
"Here's the deal." He began. "I left the arena at around 9:00 last night to go back to my hotel. While I was heading back, Goland approached me and started talkin' shit. I ended up clockin' him in the face before leaving. When I went back to see if everything had cleared up, about 20 minutes later, Sam was right there. Dead, with a bullet between the eyes." Max said as he scratched his head.
"I couldn't call the cops to report the body, because I had Goland's bastard friends accusing me of the crime. Police showed up minutes later and that's how I landed in here." He shrugged. "That's it."
Phoenix listened intently, while Edgeworth stood in thought.
"Not surprising to say the least." Miles said scratching his chin. "By 20 minutes later, you mean you returned at 9:30 perhaps?" Max thought about it for a second.
"Sounds about right, yes" He answered. Phoenix banged the table with his fist.
"Bingo." He said.
The Following Day…
Connor sat on the bench during the trial, watching as Phoenix and his on/off again opponent, Franziska Von Karma, fought for their respective verdict. The tide began turning when the witness on the stand, Brady Mendal began using blatant contradictions in his testimony. Phoenix hit the boiling point right when Brady stated the time of the murder.
"You say that my client arrived 5 minutes after the initial punch to kill Sam. Is that right?" Phoenix asked.
"Yeah." Brady scoffed. "And he killed him right in front of us!" Phoenix shook his head.
"I'm sorry Mr. Mendal, but that statement is more incorrect than your previous testimonies combined!" Phoenix exclaimed. Brady flinched, Franziska held her arm in slight anger.
"Wh...What?" Mendal said. Phoenix slammed his hands on his bench.
"A half hour passed after their initial confrontation. During this period, it was only then the real murderer killed the victim!" Wright said. The jury mumbled in surprise.
"Let's hear it Mr. Wright." The judge said. "Who is the real killer?" Phoenix smirked.
"It could only have been you...Brady Mendal!" Phoenix snapped.
"Argh!" Brady recoiled in shock. "It was him! Him I tell you!" His reaction could clearly show he was lying. Brady was sweating, twitching, and tripping on his words.
Max only smirked in his seat.
"It will end soon enough." He mouthed to himself.
Minutes later…
After the officer freed Max of his handcuffs, the first thing he did was shake Wright's hand.
"I owe you a great deal Mr. Wright." He said. Phoenix simply chuckled.
"Just doing my job." He said. Miles crossed his arms.
"What's next for you Thorne? Now that youŕe a free man…" Edgeworth began, but Max already stopped him.
"I'm planning on becoming a bailiff. Put my talents to use somewhere good instead of for the bad." Max said. Edgeworth raised in eyebrow, intrigued.
"Is that so...interesting." He said. Phoenix nodded.
"Seems like a good fit for you." He added. Max nodded.
"I'm sure one day..I'll see you guys again. But before that day comes...there are some things I need to do." Max's tone of voice shifted. Phoenix's magatama could sense it.
"What kind of…" Phoenix was cut off again.
"I'm sure one day...you'll understand. But it's my battle to fight. Thanks again." Max said before leaving the courthouse. Both Miles and Phoenix traded looks in confusion.
"That was definitely odd." Edgeworth said scratching his head.
"One can only wonder." Phoenix added.
Elsewhere
2 Weeks Later….
Standing outside the village, Max took a deep breath, prepared for what lay before him.
"I've got a bad feeling about this." Max muttered.
This was kind of a pain to write, but it was worth it. Leave a review and tell me what you think.
