AN – This is set during Valentine's Day season 7. There are spoilers (I think) so read at your own risk.
The bell signified the entrance of someone into the Diner. "Hey Luke!" The grumpy owner's ex-fiancée's daughter Rory bounced in.
"Hey Rory. What Kirk?" Luke grouched at the townie who had followed Rory in, carrying a mail bag.
"I am Stars Hollow's new mail carrier and I have some mail for you. I have to hurry. Lulu made brunch, and I don't want to miss it. It is Valentine's Day after all." Kirk said.
"Yeah, that's good for you Kirk. Can I just get my mail?" Luke said, giving plates of food to some out-of-towners.
"Ah, yes. Here you go." Kirk said, handing it over.
"You look pretty busy." Rory noted casually. Luke gave her a dirty look.
"Well, considering my only waitress is your best friend who is out on maternity leave, yeah, I guess I am pretty busy." Luke then took a second to go through the mail. He was just flipping through, "Junk, junk." When he noticed an envelope without a return address. Intrigued, he opened and inside there was a card with a picture of two people kissing. "What the…" he squinted at the front cover.
"You know, it helps if you actually open the card and read it and see who it's from. I don't think your going to find out any other way." Rory broke into his thoughts. He sighed and opened the card.
"You better shape up, 'cause I need a man and my heart is set on you. You better shape up; you better understand to my heart I must be true. The one that I want(you are the one I want), o, o, ooooo. The one I need. Oh, yes indeed." Blared from the card.
"Good Lord Luke, what is that?" Patty was by his side in a second. Luke ignored her, reading the paper and note that was inside the card.
The first thing that caught his eye was "Divorce filed by Lorelai Gilmore for Christopher Hayden on January 12, 2007. Divorce finalized on February 13, 2007."
She had filed for divorce from Chris? What did this mean for her? What did it mean for them? Did it mean anything for them? He then spied the handwritten note written on the inside of the card.
"Dear Luke,
No, you're not hallucinating and no, you're not dreaming. I filed and it went through yesterday. The irony (is that the word? Must ask Rory.) hit me last night that I got my divorce notarized in the same place as you did three, four years ago. I also realized what had happened within a few weeks of you signing those papers. Liz's wedding and the test run of the inn. By the way, thanks for the pictures. Doula is so cute! Any way, seeing as how I'm discovering that I can babble even on paper, what Sandy (the girl) sang to Danny (the boy), was true for us. You're the one that I want Luke. Any chance that you feel the same? Well, you know how to contact me. Just let me know either way. Thanks.
Lorelai
P.S. Take as much time as you need to think or process or whatever it is that you do. Just, think about it. Please?"
Luke looked up and noticed the entire town seemed to be staring at him. "What?" He barked. Then he looked at Rory. "Did you know about this?"
"Not till you opened the card and I heard the song. Only she would do something like that." She was silent for a second before saying, "You know, ever since she filed and kicked Chris out she's been sleeping on that horrible furniture that she never saw in that warehouse." Luke just nodded. It wasn't until a while later when Rory went to pay did he say,
"Keep it." He then announced, "Hey, everybody, coffee's on the house." Then went to refill Miss Patty's cup.
After he was back in the kitchen the dance teacher pulled out her cell phone and dialed a number. "Babbette? It's Patty. Have I got the scoop of the century for you. Okay, here's what happened…"
