Nervous
Moses hovered in the doorway to his room, nervously chewing his lip. His hand brushed over the cool stone like it had countless times before as he'd been growing up, though none of them had been due to a fear of entering his room. He remembered times when he'd fled into the sanctuary of his chambers after doing something embarrassing or stupid or after a fight with Rameses. Of course he'd been younger then, a mere child, and his hands had brushed over the stone as he'd run past. He had lingered longer when he had been reluctant to leave his room when he were older, more recently, when he had some boring function or ceremony to attend.
There had been a couple of moments when he'd been struck by nostalgia and had traced every curve of the pillars and archways with loving attention and gratitude.
Now he was standing on the threshold of his favourite place and was hesitating to enter…and the whole reason was that silhouette behind the gossamer veil. A silhouette that he had humiliated in front of hundreds of people and who probably hated him. Not only that but she was his slave, and he knew precisely what everyone was expecting him to use her for.
No offense to the girl but he really was not planning on carrying anyone's expectations out, nevertheless the possibility and her idea of his intentions – most likely similar to that of everyone else's – lay thick in the air around him and made him more than a little edgy. Of course he was also rallying himself to be soundly verbally abused, and the horrible sick feeling in his stomach he knew was due to the knowledge that he should probably do something that no Prince of Egypt ever should – apologise.
He halted just on the other side of the curtain and took a deep breath, clearing his throat; he pulled it back…and froze.
His servant lay tied up on the bed where she should have been and his dogs were whimpering pitifully.
Moses blinked in bewilderment, which quickly turned to admiration. His eyes flicked to the balcony where his bed sheets wound their way down to the ground. He leaned over the sill and spotted her. A smile quirked at the corners of his mouth as he stood and watched her vanishing into the darkness.
