Chapter 1: The Kittens
While the moon is ever sleeping,
While the stars forever weeping,
To this cold moonlight I howl,
In this dark midnight I meowl... -Ode of Night, Purretta (Aysha) Mewshi
Madame Mewshi struggled in her attempts to give birth. The midwife cat, a shaggy Persian, carefully helped her. She licked the kittens once they emerged until the tiny cats breathed and meowed. One, two, three kittens emerged. Two were girls and one, the runt, was a boy. They looked like small, blind rats, but they would soon grow fluffy and playful with age.
"Is that all of them?" Madame Mewshi asked, panting for breath.
"Oui, Madame," the midwife replied.
"Let me see them," the new mother said.
The midwife nudged the kittens towards their mother. They were all Siamese, like their parents, but each had slightly different markings. The largest had a very dark face, the second was the most fluffy, and the runt had a funny mark on his paw.
"You must name them, Madame," the midwife coaxed.
"Oh, yes," Madame Mewshi nodded, "This," she pointed to the largest kitten, "will be my Mewlina-ki, after her grandmother. And this little, fluffy one will be Perretta, which means clever. Now this boy, my tiny one, will be Broan, which means famous." Madame Mewshi smiled. The names fit her babies.
Madame Mewshi was a pure bred Siamese, as was her mate, Kharahn Mewshi CCXI. Kharahn was the Tah-nin-Tahna of the Gaulic cats. Madame Mewshi was in his harem and was his favorite queen. Her kittens would be princess and princesses and someday one would be Tah-nin-Tahna. She was proud of this status and flaunted it about in a tail-raised fashion.
This litter of three was the Madame's first litter. Broan would be her heir apparent, because he was her first-born son. It was only too bad that he was a runt, but she would make do. Besides, many great Zoanhaz (Toms) started life as runts. Broan would be sure to be a fine leader.
