The detective placed a thumb to his pale lips. He'd reviewed the evidence at least a dozen times. Light was guilty. No matter how the auburn haired boy denied it, it was fact. L chewed his fingernail. So why did he also know that Light and Miss Amane truly believed themselves innocent?

A glance to his right told him that everyone, save Light and himself, was asleep. Though at the time it had been pure lie, trying to pull at any emotions, there was now a bit of truth to his 'friend' statement. At least, if L thought he could make and keep a friend, this young man was the kind of person to like. It was very frustrating to say the least. At one point, the boy beside him had been nothing more than other narcissistic killer with a god-complex. Kira. And something told the detective that the innocence, whether merely a charade or not, was not permanent.

"Ryuuzaki?"

L was pulled out of his internalization, and he turned to Light. "Yes?"

"What's bothering you right now? You've just been sitting there with this blank expression. Not that it's very unusual of you."

He almost smiled, but it was hidden when he turned away from the younger man. "Just a bittersweet realization."
