They said that love wasn't something you could gain that easily, that you had to work your way through to a mans heart, that you had to suffer and know the pain of a loveless life first.
Jack Harkness knew that he hadn't suffered enough to deserve a mans love, not his love anyways.
Ianto Jones deserved more than words could say, and needless to say he deserved much more than a ex time agent, ex con man, ex soldier Torchwood Captain.
For the first time in his not so short life he realized what Doctor had felt completely. Like precious Rosie Tyler, Ianto Jones deserved domestics.
And like the Doctor it was the one adventure Jack could never have. He had tried before like so many other and failed no matter how hard he tried, the uniqueness of a very long life span.
One way or another it was damned to end in pain.
One way or another they were going to suffer in the end.
One way or another Ianto Jones was going to die one day and he wouldn't be able to have the face to show up in his funeral.
He was cursed like a few privileged people in the world. Well not people, Eternals and the last of the Time Lords more like it. He was a fixed point in time and space.
The doctor was an alien, Captain Jack Harkness was, plain and simple, wrong.
Oh so many he had hurt, so many he had bleed inside. Estelle, Lucia…
But Jack knew that Jones, Ianto Jones was different. Not in alien or torchwood or lunatic different. It wasn't about your looks or your insides it was about soul. It was about understanding.
A shared suffering.
So Jack was ready to not to say those words, at any cost. Because those words were damned to cost lifes. And Ianto Jones knew it best.
''I love you.''
''Don't.''
Then again, it didn't mean that it hadn't hurt when he didn't say them.
