No Air
by Lady of Light 4 the elves
Disclaimer: I don't own Ouran High Host Club. If I did, Haruhi and Hikaru begun dating two or three mangas ago. Oh, and this has slight spoilers for chapters 56-58.
Oh, and listen to the song "No Air" by Chris Brown and Jordan Sparks. It inspired this the first time I heard it.
No Air
Hikaru shoved his hands in his pockets in a vain attempt to warm himself. Glancing up at the apartment of the girl he loved, he resumed his pacing on the street below.
It had been a stupid fight that led him to this. He had been selfish and more than a little childish, he realized that now.
It was amazing how much he realized in the few days without Haruhi.
He had to apologize. He had to. It was killing him, suffocating him slowly. He realized that now.
Even if it turned out that she loved Tono (stupid Tono), she had to be in his life. Without her, there was no air.
Haruhi watched the elder twin pace in front of her apartment building and shook her head. She just couldn't take it anymore.
"Would you please just come inside?" She called down from the balcony. "I can't study with you out here! And you are making me dizzy with your pacing."
Hikaru looked up at the subject of his thoughts, biting his lip nervously. He was going to do it. He dashed up the steps, two at a time.
"Haruhi," he started, "you need to know." He took a deep breath. "I'm sorry. I was childish and selfish. I'm sorry I've been forcing my feelings on you. And I'm sorry for this last bit of selfishness." He leaned down to her eye level, ensuring he made eye contact. He then kissed her so softly and briefly she had no time to respond. "I love you. And I understand if you love Tono. Please just don't shut me out. Living without you in my life is impossible. It's like living without air." With that, he turned and walked away.
Haruhi touched her lips gently, watching Hikaru walk away. That was one of the most singularly selfish and brave things he had ever done.
Truth be told, she had not really given his feelings any thought beyond the obvious issues with his twin. She bit her lower lip. That was foolish and selfish of her. Maybe it was time to change that.
Hikaru wanted so badly to run away. But he forced himself to walk deliberately around the corner where his chauffeur and twin were waiting.
"Well?" Kaoru asked.
Hikaru shook his head. "I didn't give her time to answer. I want her to think about it first."
Kaoru smiled. "Someone went and got mature on me."
Hikaru punched his brother in the arm. "Have to. Without her, there's no air."
